Re: March 2019 trip

If you have a digital camera that produces RAW files, then Lightroom can work wonders on the dynamic range. It astonished me to see how much the camera captured in the highlights and shadows that could be brought out by moving a few sliders. Ansel Adams had to do a ton of darkroom work to accomplish...

Re: Thoughts About Metal Detectors

36 Code of Federal Regulations 2.1(a)(7) prohibits: Possessing or using a mineral or metal detector, magnetometer, side scan sonar, other metal detecting device, or subbottom profiler. So, for a start, it's illegal. Artifacts belong to the public which is you and me. If they are dug up and removed, ...

A sensational report. Thank you, thank you, for posting. What is wrong with the night shot of Badwater Basin? I love it.

Re: KC's Outpost, Beatty, Nevada

What kind of menu did the VFW post have? Is it all hamburgers or can you get lighter fare like chicken or fish? Someone on Yelp claimed that smoking was allowed. Is that true? If so, it's a deal breaker for us. Thank you for any help!

Re: Low Snow

Years ago, we hiked Jayhawker Canyon in early March. There was still snow in the shadows.

Re: Backcountry Navigation

I have been using a Garmin Montana 610T with good success. It's not cheap and the 7.5' topo maps can be downloaded, but for an extra fee. I carry an Android smartphone with the GPS Essentials app as a backup. It can do everything that the Garmin does except the USGS topos. You can mark waypoints and...

Re: KC's Outpost, Beatty, Nevada

Reviews of the old Sourdough's were spotty at best - some good, some bad. We didn't try it this time and that was OK with me - bad food and no liquor are a deal breakers. We drove to Stovepipe one night and had the best food I have ever eaten there.

Death Valley February 2019

We were in the park last week originally intending three hikes. The weather did not co-operate. The temps were 15 degrees below normal. The forecast was: Day 1 cool, but sunny, Day 2 40% chance of rain, and Day 3 cool and sunny with 25 mph winds. I figured that we would play it by ear and see what w...

KC's Outpost, Beatty, Nevada

We ate at KC's last night. There was a sign on the door between the restaurant and the bar saying that the place would be closing in February. The owner's wife passed away recently. He wants to retire. The restautant is for sale. If no buyer is found, then it's gone. There aren't that many places in...

Re: The Mystery of the Death Valley Germans - solved

Yes, it is fascinating and informative. We will be in Inyo County in three weeks. I hope I don't need to activate my PLB. If I ever find myself in a dire situation in the backcountry of Inyo County and require rescue, I would crawl on bloody hands and knees over miles of jagged rock until I reached ...

Re: Keane Wonder Mine

A few times in the past, we have gone to the registration desk at the Ranch and bought a pool pass for $10. There are showers at the pool. I don't know if they still do this after the renovations.
