On Foot in Joshua Tree National Park by Patty Furbush. It may be out of print, but copies are out there.

Re: Weird GPS Error

Do a Google search for "GPS jammer". A bunch of listings will come up. Do the same search on Ebay. You can buy a jammer for ten bucks. They are highly illegal, but when has that ever stopped anybody?

Re: Weird GPS Error

If your GPS is working OK now, then it was something in the field. If your GPS is still on the blink, then there is a problem in the unit. Unusual readings can happen in valleys and canyons where there is a limited view of the sky. There is also a possibility of the satellite signal being reflected ...

Try Dante's View. You can drive a paved road to 5475 feet above sea level. There are good sky views in all directions.

Re: Death Valley weather

Death Valley holds the world heat record of 134F recorded on 7/10/1913. The old record of 136.4F recorded at Al Azizia, Libya, on 9/13/1922 has been disallowed. See here: https://maps.wunderground.com/blog/weatherhistorian/comment.html?entrynum=89&page=2 There are some who say that the DV record is ...

Re: Dantes View renovation - I'm impressed, here's why

Thanks for posting the pictures. I understand that areas of heavy visitation have to be able to withstand the crowds. But, I will miss the ability to walk right up to the edge and look down.

Re: Pinto Peak

Thank you for posting this report. We attempted the route a few years ago, but turned around a few miles from the peak for various reasons. The road bed is not hard to see looking across a distance where it is foreshortened. Up close, you can be standing on top of it and not see it. Much of it is vi...

I have discussed this area with other people whom I know that have found it. The general consensus is that there is a strange feeling in the area. One is welcome to visit but not to stay. YMMV.
Maybe you felt a mountain lion's eyes on you.

If you are going out alone, spend the 300 bucks on a PLB. It can save your life.

Super accomplishment, thanks for posting!

Sidewinder Canyon is not "extremely difficult." The park service continues their tradition of discouraging the ordinary tourists from doing stuff that would get the tourists in trouble.
