KC's Outpost, Beatty, Nevada

We ate at KC's last night. There was a sign on the door between the restaurant and the bar saying that the place would be closing in February. The owner's wife passed away recently. He wants to retire. The restautant is for sale. If no buyer is found, then it's gone. There aren't that many places in...

Re: The Mystery of the Death Valley Germans - solved

Yes, it is fascinating and informative. We will be in Inyo County in three weeks. I hope I don't need to activate my PLB. If I ever find myself in a dire situation in the backcountry of Inyo County and require rescue, I would crawl on bloody hands and knees over miles of jagged rock until I reached ...

Re: Keane Wonder Mine

A few times in the past, we have gone to the registration desk at the Ranch and bought a pool pass for $10. There are showers at the pool. I don't know if they still do this after the renovations.

Re: Keane Wonder Mine

The naming problems at Yosemite started when the park service switched concessionaires from the Delaware North Corporation to Aramark. DNC claims that they paid for the trademark names like Ahwahnee, Wawona, etc. and therefore own them. The case is in court. The next hearing is scheduled for July. T...

Re: Living in Beatty

We have stayed in Beatty a lot, always at the Atomic Inn. The town seems pretty quiet. Crime does not appear to be much of a problem. I once left an expensive camera on the car seat overnight. Nothing happened. There are not many places to eat. We refuse to eat at Denny's. It's nasty. I think you wi...

Re: Park Closure

The dirt roads can be closed because they belong to the Park Service. The paved roads cannot be closed because they are state roads. They were not closed during any of the previous shutdowns. Does anybody really think that current government of California will close state roads?

Re: Park Closure

The story changes by the hour. From internet news sites But while the Los Angeles Times initially reported the park would likely remain closed for the duration of the shutdown, officials have since walked that back and are now saying they expect it to reopen by the end of the week—and they say it ma...

We hiked Telescope on the Fourth of July one year. It was 120 at Stovepipe and upper 70's on the trail.

Re: Park Closure

This morning's L.A. Times has a story. Joshua Tree had a large influx of New Year's partiers who left piles of trash. Volunteers are overwhelmed trying to haul it out. No one is pumping out the vault toilets. So, the campgrounds are closed. JT is now open for day use only. Xanterra is cleaning and s...

Re: Park Closure

The news claims piles of trash and illegal off-roading at Joshua Tree. Also, tourists are supposedly pooping beside the road in Yosemite. However, I have not seen pictures or other actual evidence. No one is saying if it is confined to a particular area or widespread. It's all vague right now.

Re: Park Closure

The Oasis at Death Valley is a private inholding. It cannot be closed by shutdown. The paved roads through the park belong to the State of California not the National Park Service. They also cannot be closed. Interesting that they say "recreate at your own risk." I recall during the last shutdown th...

Re: Conversation with Jane Lakeman - DV Curator

I didn't know that the park employed curators, but it makes sense. Thank you for the information. I am curious about gaining entrance to Cow Creek. the Cow Creek NPS facilities which are generally not open to the public on a walk-in basis but by appointment only. If you wanted to climb Nevares Peak,...
