Re: Toted my telescope atop Telescope Peak

According to the book California Place Names by Erwin Gudde, this is how Telescope Peak got its name. The peak was named in April 1861 by W. T. Henderson because of the wide, clear view that it afforded. Henderson was one of the California Rangers who are credited with having killed the bandit Joaqu...

Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

Except that cell phone coverage along the paved roads in the park is no longer unreliable. Its been good for years. People need to stop clinging to and spreading outdated information. No one used those pay phones because cell phones worked. I didn't know this. I have always assumed little to no cel...

Re: Hiking Pole Reccomendations

I have a pair of Leki Super Makalu's that I have used for 20 years. I don't know what it takes to wear these poles out. You get what you pay for.

Re: Jerry Feeman and UFO conspiracy

“No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

Re: October Trip Planning

I added up our trips. I didn't realize that we have been in DV 20 times in 19 years. Where did those 19 years go? When we were last in Jayhawker Canyon in 2010, someone had marked the easiest path from the road into the canyon by building cairns and rock linings. It was a pretty substantial effort t...

Re: Wanted: Nat Geo TOPO CD map of Nevada

If you check Ebay regularly, the Nevada set will turn up sooner or later along with every other state. NG discontinued this product years ago. Caltopo.com is an alternative source of topos.

You are more reckless than I to have clicked on that link, but thanks for letting me know what I missed :)
I run both McAfee and Malwarebytes. Hopefully, not much can get past them.

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

I never heard of this guy. His website appears to be written by someone whose native language is not English. I clicked on this https://bengkelbola88.net link that was in the site. It goes to some Asian casino in a foreign language. The whole thing looks like a scam to me. I wonder if DVJ really exi...

Re: Lithium mining at the edge of Death Valley

Here is the LA Times article A war is brewing over lithium mining at the edge of Death Valley A small Cessna soared high above the Mojave Desert recently, its engine growling in the choppy morning air. As the aircraft skirted the mountains on the edge of Death Valley National Park, a clutch of passe...

Re: Moose sighted in Death Valley

Their decorator was really into dead animals: bones, heads, and stuffed whole. It's not my taste, but whatever. Maybe they thought it would give the place a rough, tough, macho look.

Re: March 2019 trip

If you have a digital camera that produces RAW files, then Lightroom can work wonders on the dynamic range. It astonished me to see how much the camera captured in the highlights and shadows that could be brought out by moving a few sliders. Ansel Adams had to do a ton of darkroom work to accomplish...

Re: Thoughts About Metal Detectors

36 Code of Federal Regulations 2.1(a)(7) prohibits: Possessing or using a mineral or metal detector, magnetometer, side scan sonar, other metal detecting device, or subbottom profiler. So, for a start, it's illegal. Artifacts belong to the public which is you and me. If they are dug up and removed, ...

A sensational report. Thank you, thank you, for posting. What is wrong with the night shot of Badwater Basin? I love it.
