Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

When I lived at Big Pine, I would stop in at the Esmeralda Market in Dyer. Gas prices were always considerably lower than in the Owens Valley. Miscellaneous sundries were far cheaper than KMart in Bishop. Good place to get a cup of coffee, sit on the bench and visit with store employees and other st...

He is currently going to trucking school to learn to drive an 18 wheel. I'm trying to remain factual in my responses without emotionally charging them, it's not easy after how he treated me.
From photos I’ve seen of him, he’d look like a sequal to a Mad Max vs Duel movie.

Thank you for keeping locations under your hat and photos showing backgrounds that offer few clues.

Re: Swansea to Cerro Gordo

I haven’t been recently, but in my experience summer monsoon thunderstorms do more to rearrange the trail than melting snow. Boiler Canyon, in my opinion, is easier run toward Cerro Gordo. The descent has a lot of loose shale, drops nearly 1500 feet in 1.5 miles, is off camber along much of it. Ever...

Cabin still in good shape! I was there last about 1998. Thank you for sharing your trip report and images.

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

Never met him or communicated with him, but recall he was prolific on the early DV forums (1990s, early 2000s). In time his name was sullied by his own nefarious actions and people were personally negatively affected. Law enforcement was involved though to my knowledge no action taken. His personal ...

Re: Hard Luck Castle - anyone else been there?

I am wary of crowd source funding, with all the fraudulent schemes coming to light lately. If Randy’s castle page shows a link and plea for support, then I’d trust money would flow to him, and not an imposter.

Re: Finally visiting Goler / Mengel / Geologist's ... advice?

Really can’t think of a place to camp between Mengel and West Side Road. Except Willow Spring, a short distance south east of the Geologist Cabin. There is a road heading there from the cabin that dead ends there. Never been there but have read of others who have. At least you’re off the main road a...

Re: Finally visiting Goler / Mengel / Geologist's ... advice?

In addition to the Geologist Cabin, there are also the Mengel and Russel cabins nearby. In the north end, I think you might enjoy camping at Stateline ghost town. South of Gold Point, so you have quick and easy access to US95. You can get to the site via Oriental Wash, or a round about way via Tule ...

Re: Painful! Dry-nose desert syndrome?

I have had the outter part of the nostrils dry out and irritate, but nothing deep. A little dab of Vaseline usually did the trick, though I don’t like the feeling akin to a bad runny nose. Having been born and raised in the Mojave Desert, lived in Trona for five years and worked there for 20 years, ...

I don't usually take time to watch videos, but do recall quite a few photos. It seems I recall he got up pretty close to the Big Bell Mine.

Re: Travel beyond end of Keane tramway

If I remember right, Death Valley Dazed posted quite an extensive thread on the area above the mill and mine, with lots of photos and video. He posted after he attended the Keane Wonder reopening ceremonies.
