Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

Hunter Mountain is partially hidden by the Inyos, but I think that is the top of the mountain near left behind the Inyos. Past the Panamints would be the Funerals. Looking at Google Maps, I think the range immediately in front of the Spring Mountains (Charleston) is the northern end of the Nopah Ran...

Re: Strange music on 89.9 FM Driving east from Lone Pine to Death Valley

In years past there used to be a low powered station in Independence around that frequency. Sometimes there would be something playing, sometimes dead air. Didn’t have much reach, couldn’t pick it up below Lone Pine or above Aberdeen. Also might be something of a spurrious signal eminating from Chin...

Re: A few beginner's question

I assume a rental. And hopefully he stays to the well traveled paved roads.

Probably too late to suggest that the first trip be postponed to the cooler months. I hope he checks back in as I'd like to know if he survives.
Wonder if his first name is Norman ... ;-)

I have a few photos, video and notes from interviews with her as well. Her and Mike passed on too soon.

My inbox appears normal. I had two old PM threads, shows I still have lots of room left.

Re: M 7.1 earthquake in Ridgecrest

Hope all goes well. The news cycle has all but forgotten Trona’s damage, didn’t focus too closely on Trona’s damage anyway. Looking at Trona on the Web and other online sources I got a better picture as to the real severity. I’ve been through quite a few quakes in June Lake and Ridgecrest and only t...

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

The first rock staircase on DeDeckera going south is the worst of any of them and looks intimidating first approaching it. It has been a dozen years since I’ve been through there but recall it easier to negotiate than it looks. After the first staircase, the rest are easy. Since your rig is raised I...

OK. I re-read the first paragraphs and realized you came in from the east, via Lida and Fish Lake Valley. Thanks.

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

Superb trip report!

You mentioned traveling to the White Mountains via a White Mountain road instead of via Big Pine. That left me confused. The only alternatives are via Silver Canyon from Laws, or Wyman Canyon from Deep Springs Valley; both would tax the capabilities of a Compass.

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

You will be fine with the BFGs. They have 3-ply sidewalls. I think your tires are 8-ply treads. 25psi will help floatation in the sand, 20 better. Just have the means to air back up once you hit pavement. The sand isn’t normally that bad south of the dunes since the trail is well travelled and packe...

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Ah, stick to 4 Low then? Even when dealing with the sand before the canyon when coming up from the Eureka side? I figured I was just gonna keep it in 4H and go around 20-25 to keep from bogging down in the sand. Thats what I did on my KLR, it got squirrly but i didnt get stuck. Never had issues in ...
