Re: Edmunds tests Honda Ridgeliner in DV

I generally stay slow on the washboards. Takes strict discipline when you’re going less than 25mph and just getting to the rock cairn marking the road up Lippincott and you are headed to the springs. Once, trying to keep up with a group of board members after dark in ‘08 heading to PSR after running...

The tracks are of the Trona Railway. In the scene just previous you can see the Trona Pinnacles and Pilot Knob. The Trona Railway runs along the pinnacles to interchange withe the Union Pacific at Searles.

Re: Motorway to Hell - Scotty's Castle Road images

Actually, I spent more than an hour creating my reply, rereading and editing countless times, adding details and making corrections ... My interpretation of #10 was south from Gold Point, over Slate Ridge (Stateline ghost town) and accessing BP-DV road via Crankshaft or near Little Sand Spring...

Re: Motorway to Hell - Scotty's Castle Road images

I’ll chime in on this for some northern entrances. I didn’t see the ones I am highlighting on your list. If already mentioned, my apologies. You mentioned one from NV266 via Gold Point via Oriental Wash, there are others via NV266 and CA168. (By the way, you can enter Oriental Wash from US95 or NV26...

Re: Weird GPS Error

This thought came to me early on, but I stayed quiet until I heard more. Are your computer ports or USB ports that you plug your GPS into fuctioning normally? If the software controlling data exchange is malfunctioning, it might have caused an issue. My 12 year old Toshiba laptop is experiencing som...

Re: Two weeks of day hikes around Tioga Pass

Yes, it seems big fires are becoming the norm. Up here in north-central Nevada we haven’t seen the mountains 2 miles away since the Carr Fire (Redding, CA) broke out, skies have been dishwater gray and you can’t see clouds. The sun completely dissappears when it drops toward the horizon in the last ...

Re: Two weeks of day hikes around Tioga Pass

Lived in June Lake in the 1970s and 1980s. Loved to hike the backcountry. Less fires in those days, so didn’t have to dodge smoke bombs.

Re: Panamint Butte Fatality in DV

Whitney is in shadow and hard to see well to the left of CG, where the Inyos seem to disappear. I think that’s Mt. Williamson poking out from behind CG.

I believe it is Cerro Gordo Peak, the smaller, conical looking mountain.

Re: What about Lee Flat

Lee Flat a few miles north of Highway 190 might be good unless there is some light pollution from Lone Pine or Bishop? Lone Pine and Bishop, no. But there might be some glow on the southern skyline in long exposure shots; this due to Ridgecrest, the southern Mojave cities (the Victor Valley, Palmda...

Re: Stargazing with a telescope

I’ve seen some amazing night sky shots from Bonnie Clair dry lake, just inside Nevada east of Scotty’s Castle.

A note, the farther south you go in the park, the more light polution you get from Las Vegas.

Re: Caching supplies east of Saline Valley Area

I’ve met long distance hikers who cached supplies at strategic locations, but don’t know the details of their teqniques. Logic tells me that sealed stainless metal containers would protect contents. GPS coordinates a must, both on maps (for backup in case of dead batteries at the wrong time) and pro...

Re: Death Valley weather

Lingenfelter has a discussion regarding the record high in his book DEATH VALLEY & THE AMARGOSA. I believe official standards for instrument boxes have changed since then.
