My sources tell me that the flashflood happened sometime in October 2012. Some folks are going out to SV soon to measure the devastation from the SV side.

recently visited McElvoy Canyon & the Flashflood Damage

We were amazed at the devastation and loss of historical resources in the canyon. In particular, most of the McElvoy Mill machinery was washed away, along with the trail down the bottom of McElvoy Canyon, as well as the Beekeepers cabin at 4,700 feet in the canyon bottom. I have photos if anyone wan...

re: Talc Mines

Hi Tracey! Long time, no talk. Thru an acquaintance, I just met someone who worked at those Talc Mines in the 1960's! He is a career mining engineer who is now in his early 70's, and he lives near me in Atascadero. We are meeting for lunch on Thurs. I'll ask about the mines.

Chris, great pics

Hey Chris, great photo of Buddy! How'd his feet do on this trip to PC - hope you didn't need the duct tape! Just got back from Beveridge again, this time from NY Butte. We missed having you along. Still alot of snow up there - we had to hike thru about a dozen snow fields. Had a great time with Bria...

Re: desert safety. I think there is always greater risk when traveling solo. There tend to be some unusual characters (not me!) hanging out in the backcountry, though they appear to be harmless. Almost everyone I have met in the greater DV backcountry (including DV) seems to carry firearms. What is ...

no more ghosts (or towns)

Lewis, that is amazing. During the last 4.5 years, I've spent about 110 days in the desert (mostly DV and surrounding areas), and my list keeps getting longer. Why don't you hike with us to Beveridge 4/26 - 5/1 and we can talk about it?

re: CRV offroading

>This Months Vehicle Review: 1998 Honda LX CRV 4x4 The new CRV is quite different from the 1998. Which do you have? The new one seems to have greater clearance, and certainly has a stronger 4 banger. Remember, low range is not just for crawling over things, but for saving your brakes when you have t...

Chris, how was it (and how did that happen?). A Highlander

re: Butte Valley / Warm Springs Road

Just got back last night (1/22). Beautiful trip! Good news to report: the road from Butte Valley (Stella's) to Warm Springs is now passable with high clearance 4x4. We were able to get 4 vehicles through, including a stock Mitsubishi Montero and GM 1500 Full Size truck. It is VERY rough (wear a kidn...
