Has anyone hiked across DV at Badwater?

I've always wanted to do this...just start the Badwater "trail" and hike across the valley and back. I suppose you would turn around once it stopped being flat and started going up an alluvial fan. Looking at Google Earth, it looks to be about 6 1/2 miles to the other side, so would be about a 13 mi...

Re: Snow on Telescope Peak

Regarding the high clearance on Wildrose Rd, if you rent a mid-size SUV (which in my experience isn't much more expensive than a regular car), you should be fine. Ridge vs. Trail. I added some info to one of my pics roughly illustrating the difference. Basically, with the ridge, you are pushing up ...

Re: Snow on Telescope Peak

Park service is currently recommending high clearance past the pavement end. Damn, that is more bad news. I was there in early 2015 and don't remember the road being bad to the Kilns at all...maybe a little bumpy, but that's it. I will clearly have to do more research and stay on top of this entire...

Re: Snow on Telescope Peak

Here are year-by-year snow snow pics of Telescope from April 2012-2018. They range from April 8-21, but the main difference is the snowfall variation, not how late in April the pics are. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10218084766181490&type=1&l=7dda253bb2 Very helpful...thank you. Re: Snow on Telescope Peak

Ok thanks for the info and I didn't even know the road was currently closed past the Kilns. I was thinking May seems way too late (and too hot) for me to do the hike...I was thinking late March or early April, although perhaps that would be too early, but I know the snowpack varies by year. I'm not ...

Snow on Telescope Peak

I really want to hike to Telescope Peak this year and trying to figure out a good time, when there isn't crazy deep snow up there and also when I can potentially get up to road to Mahogany Flats (likely in a rental car, but hopefully 4WD). I may be out there in a couple of weeks and could try it the...

I was just about to start a thread for this myself so glad that this one is already here. I guess the first concern is whether enough snow has melted to make it to the trailhead, and then is the snow too deep at the top. But then you don't want to wait until it too hot. That is my main concern becau...

There was 16 inches at Panamint City in November, I would assume more fell at Tele, and there is still snow above Arcane Meadows last I saw on Christmas Ok thanks... When do you think is the best time of year to hike Telescope Peak? It seems like summer might be too hot starting out. Well maybe I w...

How snowy is Telescope Peak right now?

I've always wanted to hike up Telescope Peak but I assumed it would have to be done in the summer. Although I hear CA is having a big drought and if that extended to the higher elevations of DV, maybe the hike is doable this time of year? Does anyone know? Thanks.

My avatar photo is at the summit of Telescope Peak. Dante's View is a great place too. :!: I have pictures taken from there in "normal" years, and also a few years ago (2005??) when a lot of the valley was flooded; they make great comparison shots. Do you have any of these posted online? would love...

It's worth mentioning that you do NOT need 4wd or high clearance for most of what you'd want to do in DV - Racetrack, Titus Canyon, West Side Road, Mosaic, Grotto, Thorndike/Mahagony, all have been done in regular old 2wd sedans. You just have to take it slow and easy, which frankly is the best way...

I usually find disperesd campsites. Most have fire rings. The is one very large developed campground and if you enter it, drive all the way through, and continue to the west, there are several dispersed spots that have fire rings and tables, yet are seperated from the main campground. They also hav...

Where do you camp up in the White Mtns? Is it a developed campground or do you just do "dispersed camping"? Where are you allowed to camp up there? Thanks..

I did the drive through DV last Tuesday and planned and it was HOT. I was there from about 2pm to 4pm. I stopped at Zabriskie pt and walked to the overlook...there were a good number of people there, but no one stayed up there for long. It was so hot that my camera stopped working and when I was dri...
