Re: Springs on west side of Grapevine Mountains

If that’s where I think it is we looked down on the slot area from above once. Unassuming but very cool area to explore. Thanks for the report

I’ve seen hummingbirds in both the Owlshead & Cottonwood mountains the last few years.

Re: April 19-23: Badwater -> Telescope -> Badwater

great write up Brian, and congratulations on completing such an epic hike!
i’m a bit surprised at how many people you ran into but i haven’t spent much time in the area in recent years so maybe it’s more popular than i realized?

Kayak, I've only seen them in oak woodland environments, in both Shasta & Solano counties.

Re: Mountain Lions around?

I’ve seen them elsewhere in CA but have only seen tracks in DV. Personally, I’d love to encounter one in the desert but it seems extremely unlikely given how skittish the truly wild ones are. Hell, I haven’t even managed to see live Bighorns yet! Just bones, pellets and tracks.

Re: Dish washing in the desert

Wiping everything with paper towels first makes washing a lot easier too. We use paper plates now but everything else is reusable. We bring meals prepped at home and frozen in vacuum bags for desert camping. That works for the first 5-6 days, then it’s tuna sandwich time

the dunes at the head of Sand canyon are smaller but well worth visiting. one of the best hikes in the park imo.

Re: Camping near Confidence Hills

i've done it a number of times, will be out there again in a few weeks. there are some obvious pullouts to get off the road and it's nice and quiet camping out there.

Re: December 2017– Voyage of Discovery

IIRC, the ranger on the Copper canyon hike said there are at least 2 other sites in the park with tracks. I've been meaning to visit one possible area to look around but haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe in March
Very cool find Gower!

Re: Hidden Bridge Canyon - Winter Solstice Trip

You gotta see the middle canyon! The great thing about that area is you can see lower Hidden Bridge & lower Big Fall + middle Hidden Bridge in an overnight trip. And the approach hikes are all interesting in their own right. My favorite part of the park

Re: DVNP Trip - Spring 2016

Loved the report ski3pin! The Lemoigne area looked really appealing, someday when I have a capable vehicle I will spend some time there exploring.

One question, for your hike on installment 4 did you start at your Lemoigne campsite? If so I'm impressed at the distance you covered!

Re: Death Valley's competition

Looked like a great trip for sure, I'd be interested in hearing more about how you planned the trip and more about other deserts that are on your to do list. I spent a week in Sinai a long time ago, I hope it gets safe enough to visit again in my lifetime.
