Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

It was at the junction of 266 and 95, Lida Junction, NV. When I was there it was behind the brothel with the airstrip, I think it was called "Cottontail Ranch" or something? Google streetview shows it as gone, as is the entire phone booth. Dyer's a cute little town. Once I met a guy there, we'd neve...

Re: Scotty's Castle road repairs in progress

That's an interesting question, Jes. I think the palms are not native and hence would be removed - like I've seen at the Nevares Cabin and we see with the old line of palms from the DV Inn down the wash gone. But they may be considered to be part of the historic setting of the Castle, which has obvi...

And of course to get up early again the next day and repeat!

I know the drill I need to recover after my "vacations", starting with sleeping for the entire flight home. Play hard :)

Re: Three trips worth of finds

Didn't see these until now. Thanks for sharing! You have a real good eye and good info for this stuff; you're quite the hunter! I really like the pictographs - I have never seen pictos in the park. The blind and the alignment are real nice. Alignment is one of the nicest I've seen. I encountered som...

Nicer weather. Scenic area, never been up in there. What's the peak you took a bunch of pix of? Must have been in the direction you were heading and you were wondering about the snow!

Re: Dispersed Camping December

A lot will depend on the temps at the time of your trip. Echo Canyon is indeed very popular near the beginning for dispersed camping, and its down low, and also rather near Furnace Creek, visitor center and such. You could drive up Echo Canyon to the Inyo Mine area, which has some interesting struct...

Re: Looking for Full Corridor Canyon info

I've looked up at that scree from the north end of the main corridor section and from there things did not look bad but don't that that for much as I was not seriously considering making the trip over at that point.

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Wow that's a really great trip, thanks for the report. Especially with the run back to SPW for the gas can. Good call though, would have been unfortunate to find that when you started to cook your first dinner ! As for "history", 50 years is the (rather arbitrary) cutoff for historic vs. trash that ...

Re: Disappearing History

Just noticed this. Yes about the tracks in the Gower (is that what it is called up there?) entrance to 20 Mule Team. When I saw those (similar time frame to our own Gower) I reported them to the VC, but they told me that the dozer had been run by the claim owners with permission (perhaps under press...
