Re: Thirteen days in the Sahara

My original plan had been to go across the Med coast and up the Nile to Kenya, but at that time - early 70s - Americans were not allowed in Lybia at all, and not allowed upriver from the Aswan Dam in Egypt, so did the Algerian Sahara crossing instead. Hopeful for Sudan... but don't expect too much f...

Thanks for the tip on that film, Rockhopper. It's available on youtube and worth watching.

MG, I hope that you'll be posting images or trip reports of your recent adventures in the park!
Thanks for the reminder! I was on a 3 1/2 week trip (only a week in DV) and I'm only just home and still unpacking.

Re: Thirteen days in the Sahara

Wow. That's impressive. That was a different world back in 1972. How long were you in Africa for that trip? Oh I missed this question, too busy with the holidays! Actually I was in Africa about 8 months. I traveled Morroco (entered via Ceuta, Spain) - Algeria - Nigeria - Kenya. All by land, most bu...

Re: Hello from Death Valley - Thursday Night 3-28

Oh, as for 20 Mule Team. We went up Corkscrew wash and I was surprised to see a significant gap diverting some of the flow of the wash into the 20 Mule Team side. This was not so the last time I was there some years ago. Unless this gets closed up, I would expect it to be increasingly common to find...

Re: Hello from Death Valley - Thursday Night 3-28

I assume you did Ashford and Desert Hound in the same day? That is quite a hike. What route did you take? We went up that way the week before you but ran out of steam; you're obviously much faster than we are. We went up the canyon then the side canyon Diconnet mentions to get to the low point east ...

Re: Death Valley Death

I, or someone in my party, usually carries a piece of webbing, and it can be very helpful with people of differing abilities. I, for example, sometimes have difficulties on down climbs because my arthritic knees don't like to bend, and having a hand line can make a real difference. I'm talking only ...

Re: Travel beyond end of Keane tramway

To update my own request... Yes you can travel beyond the Keane mines and up on the old trail to Big Bell. The trail is clear. There's been work up there - they blasted to close the entrances to the topmost row of mines with quite large rocks and put in a chain link fence - which you can see on the ...

Re: Travel beyond end of Keane tramway

Yes, I recall that thread. Searching for "keane wonder" leads to a lot of matches here. I don't know if I'll find the answer looking at a video - I do recall a video DV Dazed posted of the actual talks at the opening ceremonies, and may have asked my question back then. But I'm getting old and my me...

Travel beyond end of Keane tramway

There was a pretty clear old mine trail that goes up from the Keane Wonder mines, all the way to Chloride Cliffs. It runs rather near some of the collapsing or questionable mine entrances that were closed off. I have not been there since the area was re-opened. I wonder, has anyone been up there who...

Water on the east side of the Panamints as well. Best way to see these images is to click on the little "camera +15" icon in the corner of the first photo. The text is not very interesting, except to point to the photographer's site. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6800057/Incredible-10-mil...
