Re: Death Valley December 2017 Trip Reports

Thanks, Kauri! More time? Indeed! I'm already semi-retired as my work winds down. Spent 2 weeks hiking in Montana this summer, 2 weeks in the Eastern Sierra (all around Tioga Pass as it was the least smoky area, and getting on the trail with the sun as it got real bad in the afternoons) and recently...

Nice photos!

Any comparison between the ascent from Zabriskie vs. your your route?

Re: Weird GPS Error

I would imagine the GPS unit should be able to deal with full memory just fine. After all, that's a condition you could encounter in normal use, if you just kept using it and never cleared out the stored track data.

Re: Weird GPS Error

Late to this discussion. I think it would take some powerful juju to corrupt the data in the unit once it had been logged. Causing a local or wider area disruption of the GPS signals such that position is erroneous, erratic, or just won't get a fix is what I would expect from GPS jamming. The annten...

Re: Death Valley December 2017 Trip Reports

This looks like a pleasant canyon to hike, without any serious obstacles. Thanks for posting, Kauri. I'll have to check it out.

Age is the problem, isn't it? I retire at the end of the year. Too much arthritis, too little cartilage left in those joints.

Re: Late october

One of the first times I felt good after my ex and I split up was during a stroll along the top of the DV Buttes. And later up on Ubehebe Peak. At least I wasn't going to lose that.

Re: Cohab Canyon, Capitol Reef

My favorite in the area is Chimney Rock Canyon. The red walls of Wingate sandstone are etched in my memory. I should go back. What I recall in the campground was the large skunks. As in, sitting at a picnic table in camp at dusk and feeling something brush against my leg, and looking down to see a s...

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

I've thought about this a lot as I'm having real knee issues. It's not quite the same question, but may be similar. I've hiked this summer in Montana (mostly trail, some off), the SIerra (almost all the real climb off trail) and Washington (again mostly trail, though some climbers' "boot track" trai...

Re: Blue Mountain awaits summiteers to register

Interesting! I'll have to consider these options on my next trip. I, too, would really like to figure out how to get out there from around Borax BM but that looks challenging!

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

Interesting comparison! I was interested to hear that you found them pretty similar in effort, though I predicted that you'd find the GC hiking easier because of the prevalence of trails. I'm paying more attention to this because I find as I age my ability to move fast off trail (at least in rocky t...
