Re: April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

That is ambitious, to say the least! I'm just hoping I can get it together (and have suitable weather at the right time) to finally climb Sentinel Peak this season!

Re: Wildflower potential

The winter started with great promise! We had some rain early in the season, but then it pretty much fizzled out. I'm hoping we get a little out of this current system. But I'm in Vegas and we haven't had any yet, at least in my part of town. Edit: 15 minutes after I typed that, it started raining h...

Re: Indian Pass

Candace, how would you describe that road in from 95? Rough but sedan, HC, or 4WD? Thanks! It has been a few years since I've been out there. But here's how I remember it. I wouldn't expect a sedan to make it. HC would be a must. Perhaps you could make it without 4WD or AWD, but your best bet would...

Re: PM’s stuck in outbox

PM's will sit in your Outbox until the recipient logs in. So check the profile of the person you PM'd...have they logged in since you sent the PM? I have a PM that has been sitting in my Outbox since February 2018! Because unfortunately that member doesn't visit here anymore. Aha, that makes ...

Re: Mixing Jealousy & Admiration For DV NPS Staff

 Aww, thanks!

I have been around DVNP and environs quite a bit over the years. Though not so much lately, as I've been chasing goals elsewhere.

Though I don't post a lot anymore, and never bother to do trip reports, I do try to chime in with a little assistance now and then!

Re: Goodbye to Borax Haystacks & Shovel Town

While you're hunting for borax haystacks / pancakes / windrows, here's some intel about a group of windrows farther south... I spotted them while driving back to the Badwater Road from the parking area at the end of the Desolation Canyon Road. I parked along the Badwater Road and strolled out to the...

Re: Saline Valley Road Observation

That approach may be more useful in some areas that others. There's a lot of roadless terrain in the Goldwater range and Cabeza Prieta. Hell, those emergency signaling devices, even the ones I saw that were right next to the roads, have signs saying it'll take the BP an hour to get there. So seeing ...

Re: Indian Pass

This area is covered in Digonnet's guidebook. You can drive to the Indian pass area via a bumpy dirt road from Highway 95 in Nevada. That's what I did. When you get to the end of the road, you can locate the top of an old trail that makes its way down to a couple of mine shafts. The last time I was ...

Re: Saline Valley Road Observation

I don't think the Border Patrol is dragging to make for a better ride down the road. Other than to smooth the road surface, what other purpose is there in using a tire drag? Makes sense to me that the BP tries to keep the roads smooth. They do a lot of driving around out there. I can remember drivi...

Re: Saline Valley Road Observation

...BTW - the hourly rate for wilderness/off-pavement towing is $350.00 per hour. That's not bad. Four years ago in Colorado, I was charged $500/hour for an "off-road recovery" from an unmaintained jeep trail. The recovery was simple, my dead vehicle was parked at the end of the trail. They just had...

Re: Saline Valley Road Observation

Wow, Candace, a local newspaper reporter could not have done a better job with this report. Photos included! Thanks for taking the time to post this. Thanks! IMHO, I am more thorough and careful than most reporters these days, but that's another topic. :D Here's a bonus pic of the Border Patrol usi...

Re: Wildflower potential

No updates yet on the Park's web site. But if you scroll down a ways, they explain the conditions needed for a good bloom.

Re: Hard Luck Castle - anyone else been there?

Hopefully Randy will find a buyer for his masterpiece. Wasn’t there a group that organizes retreats which was interested in it at some point? There have been a number of "interested" parties over the years. But to hear Randy tell it, few if any of them are serious. Some may think they are serious, ...
