Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

As for the dial-less phone, I encountered one with the number, IIRC, Lida Junction #2, in about 1990 when I was heading over to Dyer to meet someone and go into the White Mtns. Was it in Dyer? Or somewhere else? Maybe in "Oasis", which is the junction of Hwys 266 and 168, southeast of Dyer. Old pho...

I just logged on to post Abby's email response. Only to see that she has done it herself, LOL!

Yeah, I keep checking eBay. Other states are popping up. But haven't seen a Nevada set yet.

Re: Scotty's Castle road repairs in progress

Within the last week, I talked to Randy Johnson of Hard Luck Castle. He told me that he had been down to the Construction office along the highway and talked to the people there. He says they told him their work was supposed to be done in June, but wouldn't be done until July. So does that mean at l...

Haven't been there. And not sure if I'll make it this season or not!

Scotty's Castle road repairs in progress

A couple days ago, I was in the vicinity of NV Highway 267. This is the road that connects US Highway 95 to Death Valley via Grapevine Canyon, passing by Scotty's Castle along the way. Or, it used to make that connection before it washed out in October 2015. In the morning I observed several vehicle...

Wanted: Nat Geo TOPO CD map of Nevada

I'm trying to find a set of the discontinued National Geographic TOPO CD maps for the state of Nevada. In particular, I'm looking for version 4.x. This is the item I'm talking about, listed on Amazon but out of stock: https://www.amazon.com/TOPO-National-Geographic-Topographic-Nevada/dp/1597750433 T...

Re: In between hikes - lots to see and do

The boulder field on the low hill west of the Artist Drive exit is known as Mars Hill. At -210' I believe it is the lowest summit on my list. ;-) https://listsofjohn.com/mobile/peak/183550 It has been hard to avoid having a dirty windshield, given the huge numbers of butterflies flitting around the ...

Re: Pleasant Canyon Road conditions?

David replied on the other site, fairly recently it was in standard condition.

Hopefully it stays that way through May. I've decided the only way I'll get to Sentinel Peak is by climbing Porter again then traversing to Sentinel, LOL.

Pleasant Canyon Road conditions?

I asked this question over at Panamint Valley dot net, but haven't got an answer. So I'll try asking here! What are the conditions on the Pleasant Canyon Road? I'm wondering if it's possible to follow these driving directions: from Clair Camp, drive 2.5 miles to a Corral. Then bear right, and drive ...

Re: Ticks in Death Valley

Well, I'm "ticked off" that you got to summit Panamint Butte and I did not. I considered hiking past Lemoigne Mine to Panamint Butte but wisely chose not to due to fatigue. I would not have made it back to Emigrant until well past dark. :help: Candace, you better provide a trip report of your adven...

To update this, yesterday I climbed Panamint Butte from the Big 4 mine. Up closer to the summit, two or three times I found a tick walking up the front of my pants.

Here's a link to the list, but I'm not sure if it's visible to non-members: Wow Candace, what a resource for hikers and scramblers and is user-friendly. I did not see Blue Mountain listed unless it's what the list refers to as Artist Palette Peak? I will most likely join up to the list and donate t...

Re: Low Snow

I don't have a picture to share right now. But yesterday, I was at about 7400 ft in the New York mountains in Mojave National Preserve. And I was amazed how much snow is still up on the Panamints.

Re: All aboard The Blue Mountain Express

On the topic of Death Valley National Park peaks lists, the site "Lists of John" has such a list. And their list has 465 ranked peaks and 559 total peaks. ;-)

Here's a link to the list, but I'm not sure if it's visible to non-members: https://listsofjohn.com/NP/arealist.php
