Re: Death Valley weather

Agreed, the 1913 low temperatures in that chart look way off. Especially when you contrast them to the lows over the last week or so. And moreso when you look at the information in that article, comparing the FC readings to other data points. Having said that though, last October I spent a couple of...

Re: Death Valley weather

For my part, living here in Vegas, I'm ready for a break from these "excessive" temperatures! Supposedly the "excessive heat warning" ends this evening. But forecast highs will still be 105+ as far out as the NWS forecast goes. I think I'm ready for a break, maybe I should go up to the White Mountai...

Re: Death Valley weather

Friday makes four 127 degree days in a row... https://farm1.staticflickr.com/859/42966394704_58e92cb40e_o.jpg But apparently that's not stopping the tourists! https://twitter.com/vegasphotograph/status/1022649997374812160 https://farm1.staticflickr.com/930/42780313185_76a958657b_o.jpg

Re: Death Valley weather

Based on my own past observations, and discussion here, that readout isn't connected to the "official" WX station there in FC. Seems like it would be easy enough to do!

Re: Panamint Butte Fatality in DV

I found it hairy enough just visiting the various mine structures in that area. In particular the Big Four Mine. While there I was looking around wondering where the route started. I thought it was close to the mine opening? Anyway, the stats alone reveal how steep that route is. I think the only ro...

Re: Panamint Butte Fatality in DV

Some more details here: "At approximately 9:45am, the aerial search team located personal items including a backpack, empty water bottles and printed information referencing hiking Panamint Butte, which is about one mile east of the vehicle on the slopes of Panamint Butte. [I interpret this to mean ...

Coyote melons in Australia? Cockatoos like to eat them!

During both my 2008 and 2018 treks through Australia, I came across what look to me just like the coyote melons that I see here at home. I usually spotted them growing along the road. Or as in one of the pics below, along a railroad track. I saw them in scattered places in the outback regions of so...

Re: Australia in 5500 miles

The only place you mentioned that I have been to is Purnululu NP (Bungle Bungles)! That was in 2008. I spent a full day there, and I think I did the same hikes. My recent (May-June of this year) trip began and ended in Darwin. At least the driving part. And I concluded that if I return, I ...

Re: Ghost Town for sale

I haven't been up there for 2-3 years. Was the place being restored, or even properly maintained? Simply maintaining it as it was would take effort and money. The fact they put it up for sale tells me the family found it a burden and probably a money pit.

I tried listening to that radio interview, but the lame hosts and stupid cliches had me tuning out pretty quickly.
