Re: Rattlesnake season?

It generally depends on the temperature. But I came across a rattler in a gully once (not in DVNP), though the temperature didn't seem warm enough for any reptile to be out. However, it was sitting in a sunny spot that was apparently cozy for it. My view is, if its warm enough to see lizards out, it...

Re: Mountain Lions around?

... I will continue to think they are just as afraid of me as I am of them... That is true of mountain lions, bears and snakes! Except for the ones (namely bears) that have lost their fear of humans. Due to getting easy food from careless humans in the past. The snakes are way smaller than any adul...

Re: Stumbled upon plane crash above Widow Mine

I spotted this while poking around on top of that butte above Ryan. That was in Nov. 2014, and the site looks about the same now. Thx for the info about the pilot and crash.

Re: What is it, and/or where is it?

As for mine, those pictures were taken at Lost Spring. That is in a side canyon off Anvil Spring Canyon. It's also part of the route to Sugarloaf Peak.

Re: What is it, and/or where is it?

Sat for nearly a week without a peep… This is Cave Rock Spring, on the east slope of the Amargosa Range (Grapevine Mtns.) about 5 miles north of Titus Canyon! A deathly quiet canyon with lots of history scattered on the ground. LOL, I just saw your picture! But I can't say I immediately recognized ...

That is an interesting shot of the big cat. It must sense that something is there something watching its movements.
This is from one of those wildlife cameras with a motion sensor. It does make a sound when it goes off. So that's why you'll often see the animal looking at the camera.

Re: Mountain Lions around?

From the link: "Surrounding mountains; occasional winter visitors to desert oasis." Does "surrounding mountains" mean the mountains around DV itself? Or does it refer more to the higher ranges around the Park? I've heard/read many times that they're around the Park. But, has a photo of a mountain li...

Another brain teaser!

I took these pics from a bypass trail. This spring is in the Park, have you seen it?

Re: What is it, and/or where is it?

None of the guesses were correct. (BTW, Skookum is one place I've never been but it seems intriguing!) The pics were taken at an unnamed (at least on the topo) site near Indian Pass. It's on this map snippet, in the lower right corner where it says "prospects." I included a large snippet to give you...

Re: Ticks in Death Valley

I think I just used the little tweezers from one of those small Swiss Army knives. After that I bought one of those tick keys which I keep in my hiking pack.

Fortunately, the one on needle Peak was still just walking around on my neck so it was easy to brush it off.

Re: Ticks in Death Valley

I climbed Needle Peak on Friday. Shortly after reaching the summit, I felt something crawling on the back of my neck. Swiped it off and it was a tick. :eek2: Yuck! Later, during the descent, I spotted one walking up my pants leg. I grabbed a tiny twig, let the tick walk on to that, and threw it away...
