This sounds great. Badwater in August is doable EARLY in the morning (I did it last September at 4:30AM).

Re: 1911 Topo Map of DV and Ballarat - 100 year perspective

The narrow guage railroad north of Keeler went away in 1960. The standard guage railroad in the lower right had rails removed for several miles south of the Lone Pine depot in 1984, the rest of the line abandoned south to Searles and rails removed 1998-1999. Was 98-99 when they also removed the rai...

There are some interesting items on the old topos. I finally managed to track down Scraper Spring using them.

Thanks to both of you for the info.

I'm going to go through that list and see which ones best suit my needs!

Hiking Pole Reccomendations

I am going to be doing a couple of steep hikes in October and I would like to pick up some hiking poles.

Anyone have recommendations?

Re: May 10-20, 2019: Ballarat -> Butte Valley -> Panamint Pass loop, plus day hikes

Fun! Looks steep down into the pass. The time I traversed the Sentinel ridge I was postholing in thigh deep snow, which surprised me quite a bit and certainly slowed me down, resulting in getting off the peak well after dark. I did Telescope on my first trip back in 2006 and luckily there wasn't an...

Great photos!

The cairn probably pre-dates mining times based on others I have seen.

It never occurred to me to keep track of how many times I've visited the Park!
I started saving my entrance fee receipts about 5 years ago, so I use that, plus my photos. I wanna make it to over 200 :D

Re: Ghost Town for sale

I just saw this and replied over on Panamintvalley.com . And here I'll ask the same question I asked there! "...Hike to the Saddle - one of the only places on earth that you can see both the nation's highest peak in Mt. Whitney and the deepest valley in Death Valley..." I'm not sure which...

Re: Missing Mt. Whitney Hiker: Last Picture from Badwater

Really a terrible ending, I had been following this story since it broke. Sadly, I think we're going to see situations such as this increasing, especially after reading this article. https://www.outsideonline.com/2330916/mount-whitney-climbing-accidents Personally, I have serious issues with mountai...

Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

Boooooooo.

Keep the payphones. Even though SPW and FCR have pretty good cell service now, it isn't full-proof. As Mojave Geek stated, those 4-5 minutes you got were perfect for checking in with people and letting them know you were alive. I did it many times.

Gower- This one followed me and brought me a twig as a gift, I guess!

DVD-The sleeping circles in this area are of the human type, however, I have seen the bighorn variety! I have better shots of them, but they give away the location. Send me a PM if you would like to see more of the layout.

And of course to get up early again the next day and repeat!

I know the drill I need to recover after my "vacations", starting with sleeping for the entire flight home. Play hard :)
When I got back home in March I slept 14 hours the first night, I was goooooooooooone.

Wow, I thought I was up to a lot of trips for someone who has to fly in (planning a brief #14, since 2008) in August.
McCarran is such a mess   . But it is a small price to pay for Death Valley!
