The Twice Delayed March Trip

Well.....here we are. I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy (and sane). I had to reschedule my trip twice, I am finally a go for June 28th-July3rd. This drastically limits and changes my options, I will also not be camping and will be indoors. I have been at this time of the year before,...

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

Well, the articles confirms what we knew, plus some additional information. Personally, I dealt with him once. After some e-mails I spoke with him on the phone in October 2015 and was thoroughly weirded out by him. Long story short, he was trying to get sites out of me. He kept asking about two spri...

Re: Cottonwood Water Sign

The sign went missing sometime in 2017. I hike that trail often, It was there in October of 16, by September of 17 it was gone. Idiots!

Re: Leave a Car Overnight at SW, Furnace Creek?

Hey Eric-

I have parked my car at the FC Ranger Station before overnight. I called ahead and asked and then let them know who I was and the make and model of the car when I left it.

First trip of the new decade!

I just finished plotting out my hikes. Here goes. Day 1 Two petroglyph sites, one where I found another minor site last October, I know there has to be more. 16 miles RT for both. Day 2 A hike in the Cottonwoods to find a third dance circle and potentially more petroglyphs. 20 miles RT. Day 3 An unn...

Re: Mixing Jealousy & Admiration For DV NPS Staff

I know of one person who has a web presence (but no account here) who has probably done more in the Owlsheads and Eureka areas than anyone else. My own lowly record from 2010-2019 added up to 2,100 miles of hiking in the park. I can't be very specific or open with some of my treks though, due to the...

This sounds great. Badwater in August is doable EARLY in the morning (I did it last September at 4:30AM).

Re: 1911 Topo Map of DV and Ballarat - 100 year perspective

The narrow guage railroad north of Keeler went away in 1960. The standard guage railroad in the lower right had rails removed for several miles south of the Lone Pine depot in 1984, the rest of the line abandoned south to Searles and rails removed 1998-1999. Was 98-99 when they also removed the rai...

There are some interesting items on the old topos. I finally managed to track down Scraper Spring using them.

Re: May 10-20, 2019: Ballarat -> Butte Valley -> Panamint Pass loop, plus day hikes

Fun! Looks steep down into the pass. The time I traversed the Sentinel ridge I was postholing in thigh deep snow, which surprised me quite a bit and certainly slowed me down, resulting in getting off the peak well after dark. I did Telescope on my first trip back in 2006 and luckily there wasn't an...

Great photos!

The cairn probably pre-dates mining times based on others I have seen.

It never occurred to me to keep track of how many times I've visited the Park!
I started saving my entrance fee receipts about 5 years ago, so I use that, plus my photos. I wanna make it to over 200 :D
