Re: Strange music on 89.9 FM Driving east from Lone Pine to Death Valley

I wasn't able to listen to the clip either and I was logged in to my Flickr account. I got a message that the clip is private. I just uploaded to YouTube and swapped in the link so hopefully you should be able to see it now. I'll add that I've tuned into this station a few times over the last coupl...

Strange music on 89.9 FM Driving east from Lone Pine to Death Valley

I've been in a rental car flipping through FM stations several times while driving in the Death Valley area, trying to tune in any hint of music or news. For some reason, I've been able to tune in to 89.9 FM near Keeler or Swansea a few times. This is the area east of Owens Lake. The station comes a...

Congrats on Whitney! That's a heck of a day hike. I don't think I'd get any sleep at all if I knew my alarm would go off at 12:30 am.

Re: A jet crashes in the DV area, several onlookers injured

When I drove by the viewpoint last week, it was still closed, with a police officer standing guard at the entrance. It was around 100 degrees out and it looked unpleasant for the officer to be there by the road with a bulletproof vest on in that heat. However, when I drove by yesterday (8/20) the pa...

Re: Hiking Pole Reccomendations

I only use one pole, but I got a pair at Wal Mart for $10-$15 a few years ago and they've been with me for a few hundred miles. I can't say how they stack up to higher end poles. The ones I have have been great for me, though.

Re: A jet crashes in the DV area, several onlookers injured

I feel badly for the pilot's family and colleagues who likely have to say goodbye to someone who was still young. It's interesting that this viewpoint was rather recently upgraded and improved. It's truly a unique place in the national park system. Given the meager budget the Park Service has to ope...

Re: M 7.1 earthquake in Ridgecrest

Sorry to see the chimney damage, but glad you are alright, blackturtle. Hoping for the best in the surrounding communities. One interesting report I saw on the Mt. Whitney Facebook page was that some hikers on the mountain didn't feel anything during the July 4 quake. I always thought that being rea...

Agree, that these are nice to see in installments.

Is that a relay station in the center of the picture...?

Missing Mt. Whitney Hiker: Last Picture from Badwater

There's an overdue hiker who made his way through Death Valley to Mt. Whitney last week in case anyone has any information. It sounds like the hiker's family is coordinating with Inyo County and other area authorities:

Down to Butte Valley and around the west side of Striped Butte and on to Geologist's cabin. This has a lot of Striped Butte shots. https://www.flickr.com/photos/168127823@N04/albums/72157708968271681 Here is a lower res version of one of the better ones: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48016670...

I went much farther than I care to admit before realizing my mistake and turning back.
Half the fun of making a mistake is not realizing it, and even when realizing it, not admitting it to yourself.

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Barely hit Cottonwood in this larger loop from Emigrant Campground/Bathrooms, avoiding the road: The dryfalls at the beginning in Canyon 7 are bypassable. http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8022827 That's a great idea for loop. Nice pics from the top of Panamint Butte too! That 3rd side...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Wow that's a really great trip, thanks for the report. Especially with the run back to SPW for the gas can. Good call though, would have been unfortunate to find that when you started to cook your first dinner ! I did a couple years of no cook backpacking before I figured out that a hot meal at the...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

The blue line was exactly what I was thinking. Both Kauri and Steve Hall have info on the side canyon of Marble (with a short nice narrows) that leads right to the pass the blue line goes through. I'd be interested in reading that. Do you know if that info is in one of their trip reports? An epic t...
