Missing Mt. Whitney Hiker: Last Picture from Badwater

There's an overdue hiker who made his way through Death Valley to Mt. Whitney last week in case anyone has any information. It sounds like the hiker's family is coordinating with Inyo County and other area authorities:

Down to Butte Valley and around the west side of Striped Butte and on to Geologist's cabin. This has a lot of Striped Butte shots. https://www.flickr.com/photos/168127823@N04/albums/72157708968271681 Here is a lower res version of one of the better ones: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48016670...

Great report! Looking forward to some Striped Butte pics if you have any.

I went much farther than I care to admit before realizing my mistake and turning back.
Half the fun of making a mistake is not realizing it, and even when realizing it, not admitting it to yourself.

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Barely hit Cottonwood in this larger loop from Emigrant Campground/Bathrooms, avoiding the road: The dryfalls at the beginning in Canyon 7 are bypassable. http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8022827 That's a great idea for loop. Nice pics from the top of Panamint Butte too! That 3rd side...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Wow that's a really great trip, thanks for the report. Especially with the run back to SPW for the gas can. Good call though, would have been unfortunate to find that when you started to cook your first dinner ! I did a couple years of no cook backpacking before I figured out that a hot meal at the...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

The blue line was exactly what I was thinking. Both Kauri and Steve Hall have info on the side canyon of Marble (with a short nice narrows) that leads right to the pass the blue line goes through. I'd be interested in reading that. Do you know if that info is in one of their trip reports? An epic t...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Thanks, John. I took a quick look, and I think peak 5923 (?) above is the black peak you're talking about. Yes, it looks like there are more reasonable routes this way, like the blue line or just north of that. I had been looking at routes like the red one, coming from the Big Fall Canyon area. But ...

Did you do a trip in the Cottonwoods? Trip report perhaps?
Yes, I did do this trip and finally posted a trip report just now.

I found a very nice spring in Marble Canyon so did not end up looking very hard for the spring at Goldbelt.

Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

The hike from Death Valley to Racetrack Playa was a trip that was in the back of my mind but not something I intended to do up until a few days before leaving for the Park this past February. And even when I got to the Park, seeing that Cottonwood Canyon Road was closed due to flooding (making the h...

Re: KC's Outpost, Beatty, Nevada

There aren't that many places in Beatty to eat. We have been going there for years. It will be missed. I've never been to KC's, but I did eat at Sourdough this week. I hesitate to say anything negative about a local restaurant in Beatty since the options are so few and any warm meal is appreciated....

Low Snow

I just got back from a backpacking trip in Death Valley and was struck by the low elevations at which I was finding snow. There had been snow on the ground in Las Vegas the day before I got to the Park, and some quick snow showers on the drive on 95 north from town through Beatty. Stovepipe Wells lo...

Re: Backcountry Navigation

If using a smartphone is an option, I really like the Gaia GPS app. I download topo maps and satellite imagery to my phone before each trip. You can also use their web site to plan routes and sync to your phone. Once on the trail, put the phone in airplane mode and the pre-downloaded maps will show ...

A couple of odds and ends in the bill: SEC. 604. MORMON PEAK MICROWAVE FACILITY - The designation of the Death Valley National Park Wilderness by section 601(a)(1) shall not preclude the operation and maintenance of the Mormon Peak Microwave Facility. I don't know anything about the Mormon Peak Micr...

Water at Goldbelt Spring?

I am likely headed to Death Valley for my annual winter backpack trek this week. One of the routes I am looking at is heading up Marble Canyon towards Goldbelt Spring. It looks like water can be hit or miss in Marble Canyon. Given the namesake of Goldbelt Spring which is slightly beyond Marble, I wa...
