Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

Judging from his lack of response to emails and not answering phone calls he has no intentions of honoring his debits that were actually scams or making any attempt to clean up his past.

That Newsweek article was published about the time he was screwing me out of my money.

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

I add my personal documented experience. In June of 2016 I fell for one of his sob stories and thought I'd help a guy down on his luck and buy a table top style of book with a bunch of pictures. Paid up front total of $45.63. Waited, waited and nothing. Sent countless emails nothing. Still nothing. ...

Re: Disappearing History

I was surprised how fast the the site of Garlock faded to nothing from the time I was a kid. Location next to a paved road did not help.

They taste like hell and are tough and gamy, best to simply look at.

Re: Thoughts About Metal Detectors

That would work in national parks, state parks, or wilderness areas. There is lots of legal areas to use on BLM land. Bad guys are just that, bad guys and they are going to do whatever they think they will get away with. It is easy to do. I don’t think it is illegal to have one in possession but ill...

Thoughts About Metal Detectors

I’m not bitching or complaining so don’t think I am. Don’t need anyone ridiculing or abusing anybody with an opinion. I have noticed a lot of areas that are obviously metal detectors being used to dig up areas to locate what under the surface. Sometimes you see an old can and is left at the area. So...

Re: Amateur radio use in DVNP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN-L2HFC2RE This is what I use and really does the conversation here no good because they don't make it anymore. This unit uses (2) aa's. I have never used it in a real emergency thank goodness. I use it to let freinds know where I'm spending the night while they sit ...

Re: Amateur radio use in DVNP

I have the very first Model and haven't paid that much attention to battery life. Mine is set to ping every ten minutes and leaving it on full time I know it goes (4) days. It may go longer but I just change batteries when knowing it will be a long trip. Overnighters I just change batteries when it ...

Great trip report! One thing that scares me is "64-year-old guy with the brains of a senile marmot" I thought I was the only one!

That's right, smoking! I had already decided to try the VFW next week but smoking is a buzzkill.

Re: Backcountry Navigation

I second the positive experience with the Garmin Montana units. It's biggish, heavyish, and somewhat expensive. They can occasionally be found on sale. Oh, and you don't have to use pay-maps on the Garmin. Free topo and other downloads are available at gpsfiledepot.com . I also can vouch for Gaia G...

They hopefully learned from the previous shutdowns and corrected protocol with that earlier experience.
