Re: Christmas 2019: Sand, Sun, and Snow (Pic Heavy)

Nice! Thanks for the lovely, detailed report. Did you remain camped in the same location for all your nights in the park? How cold was it at night? Thanks Yes we remained at our traditional (13 years) campsite at Lemoigne Canyon all 2 nights. Most we’ve spent was 4. It wasn’t too cold at night, may...

I guess about 8 feet of material was removed. Must have been some flood!

Christmas 2019: Sand, Sun, and Snow (Pic Heavy)

For the first time since 2016, we were able to take a family trip to the Valley. It's a long drive from Bend, where we convene, out Highway 20, down Highway 95, and about 11 hours to Tonopah for the night. The drive through Eastern Oregon and down through Nevada is spectacular in winter. https://liv...

Re: Jets at Star Wars canyon

is it ok to go in the water at Darwin Falls? Are there any other places to go in the water in Death Valley? There's a couple small ponds along the stream there. Those are THE WATER SOURCE for Panamint Springs village. They have a small chlorination and filter system, but it's best if we don't go in...

Re: Winter weather

Hey all--- Just returned from the Valley. On Christmas Day, some power and telecomm issues caused the internet for SPW resort/gas station to accept cash only. By the time we left on Dec. 28, they had solved the issue and were accepting electronic payments as well. When we came into the valley on Dec...

Re: Jets at Star Wars canyon

Any sights you want to see in Death Valley depend entirely on your physical ability and desires and the vehicle you are driving. If you're on a motorcycle, then you probably don't want to do things with long gravel/sand roads. The stuff in the tourist core like Golden Canyon, Artist Palette, Badwate...

Re: Jets at Star Wars canyon

They have stopped all flights through that canyon (called Rainbow Canyon) after a crash there a few months ago killed a pilot and injured bystanders. It was a shortcut on a training loop that pilots fly to gather flight hours, called the JEDI transition (it crossed from section DE to IJ) so they so ...

Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

It's odd...but the last couple of years, when we make our way south driving past Burns, OR in far SE Oregon, our ATT signs becomes "out of network" through central NV and into DV. No extra charges or notices have been charged. But at Teakettle Junction we got four bars ATT 4G. Everywhere else in th...

Re: -45 degrees F in October in Utah...wondering....

I have experienced inversion layers in the park several times; most often in the winter after storms. It'll be in the 50s in the valley but also up at Wildrose. I've never seen or heard about a 40 degree difference though, however we do have those in Oregon (ice in Portland, 45 and sunny at Mount Ho...

Re: Scotty's Castle road repairs in progress

It seems like a lot of the delay has to do with restoring on-site utilities, going through the historical preservation boards to make needed changes to some structures, and rebuilding the road. I read a short report that revealed that the old road was built in essentially the worst possible place in...

At Dante's, sometimes people are in the view and it makes it all the more interesting. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48840587513_86ff6fee38_b.jpg DSC_0204 by Andrew Dunning , on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48841132107_2ba5735dba_b.jpg DSC_0195 by Andrew Dunning , on Flickr
