Re: Telescope from Hall Canyon?

I must have confused Hall with Jail or Happy Canyons! Good to know Hall is clear above the cabin.

Re: Telescope from Hall Canyon?

I haven't personally, but it would like to attempt it some day. I recall a report from many years ago, probably on another forum, reporting impenetrable or difficult undergrowth and dense brush along much of the route.

Re: All aboard The Blue Mountain Express

Kinda looks like aircraft wreckage. If it's not that, then probably desert varnish.

Re: Springs on west side of Grapevine Mountains

I'm glad to see exploration in this area! It's been on my radar for a very long time. Looks like an interesting place to clamber around!

Generally in these images, light blue is snow or surfaces of similar reflectivity, such as salts. I got my info from the Panamint Springs facebook page.

Re: Flooding and Lake Manly today?

Today the playa at Panamint lake is flooded, and is providing excellent reflections of the Panamints from Highway 190. Nobody seems to have investigated the depth of the lake, but checking the rainfall total map for DV, the odds are good there's at least some water in Badwater, and with the catchmen...

It's probable I took the wrong trail, but what I did was absolutely as dangerous as described.

Re: trip in March

I can't speak for the other things, but in the several times I've been up Grotto to the major dry fall (never attempted a bypass), we climbed up the initial falls, which allows access to a lovely little pulpit between falls. It was a challenging climb, and some of the others were as well, and we wer...

Re: Keane Wonder Mine

While some may joke about changing the name of the park it happened with "The Oasis" which will always be Furnace Creek for me. Wasn't the lodge name in Yosemite changed as well? History needs to preserved for a reason. Our society today is so quick to attempt to erase history because it is scary a...

Re: Lee Flat Overlook Road, Nearby Mine

It depends what you're looking for. The workings aren't impressive, but the minerals and the views are exceptional. The cabins are pretty nice, too. The few mines I've been in up there were rather treacherous, but worth poking one's head in to. Check this one out: http://dvexplore.blogspot.com/2016/...

Re: Gnarly Notch Anomaly Near Keane Wonder

At some point when the level of the alluvial fans were at that level (I think about 10k years ago, but I'd have to check my books for that) the flow pattern changed to cut through that bar there, and as the level of the alluvium has dropped from erosion and the uplift of the mountains, it has contin...

Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

As far as Rogers goes, I have some (possibly outdated) intel on that. As of 2016, their use permit was in the pipeline to maintain their lease atop the mountain. From what I was told, the permit was simply to hold the spot and the tower up there, and would require another permitting process to re-in...

Re: Nov 8-12

Unless you have a really sturdy, built, high clearance, 4WD car, you should not drop down into the canyon at the end of the road. There's a wide parking area when you reach the mouth of the canyon, and unless you are experienced with rocky sandy roads, you should stop there. The last mile or so is r...
