Re: Rogers Peak Meditation

Thanks! yes, blackturtle has lots of good stuff out there.

I'm targeting my next trip for May, so based on what you said, I am might do it later in the month than I otherwise would have.

Re: Rogers Peak Meditation

Nice! You've been to the park so many times, maybe you know this:

What's the best time to see flowers in the upper Panamints? I've usually been there in April--much too early

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

I made a minor addition to the hike comparison: breaking down each day into 3 segments. It is now the last picture in the album:

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

I now have an official name for my knee issue: Illiotibial Band Syndrome . It seems to be primarily a nuisance issue, which I was glad to hear because I feared I was doing actual knee damage. I posted a question about it to the Grand Canyon Hikers group on Facebook and got lots of ideas about how to...

Panamint Canyon Hop and Traverse (spring 2019)

I finally took the time to figure out how to save maps in caltopo and started mapping out a route to hit the western Panamint canyons from Tuber to South Park and then traverse the crest back north. It looks to be about 75 miles total, and I am planning to allocate 7-10 days to do it next spring. I ...

Re: Late october

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to a nice refuge from the personal difficulties. If it works out the divorce will be final in time for our trip to Divorce Valley N.P. I like the Panamint Campgrounds, too, as campgrounds go. I'm looking at some moderate hikes like Perdido Canyon. Maybe Titanothere ...

Re: Late october

Hey, for all of us divorcees, maybe we could upgrade Death Valley to Divorce Valley National Park - a refuge from pain and suffering amidst the wonders of nature. LOL :) In my case, it was needing a project to avoid depression that the idea of Badwater -> Telescope went from "that's crazy!" to "I'm...

Re: Late october

Camping away from the crowds is the way to go IMO, though I do enjoy a night at Emigrant, Wildrose, Thorndike, Mahogany Flat, Homestake, the Eureka Dunes, and Saline Valley Springs.

Very sorry to hear about the divorce......been there and done that. No fun at all.

Re: Pot Bust in DV

A Facebook discussion precipitated an inquiry into the Hanaupah Canyon bust. The Ranger in charge of the investigation emailed me about it yesterday. (He asked me not to share his name.) He said their biggest concern now is about the safety of the water because the growers were using Carbofuran as a...

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

Interesting comparison! I was interested to hear that you found them pretty similar in effort, though I predicted that you'd find the GC hiking easier because of the prevalence of trails. I've been thinking more about this question. Generally, while hiking uphill, I tend to go whatever speed is dra...

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

Nice video! I had an encounter with a lone, elderly female bighorn in the Grand Canyon. She was just coming up the trail toward me. She stopped briefly to look at me, then casually passed on by just a few feet from me, completely unafraid. The first picture I got of her has her sticking her tongue o...

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

I won't be able to dive deep into your exciting write-ups and photos until October. This will probably be a very slow process as I get time, and then will have to compete with my planning of future trips, which include: 1) A day hike extravaganza, hoping to do Charleston, White Mountain, Whitney, a...

B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

Getting started with the comparison write-up of three major backpacking trips (major as judging by my abilities and/or lack thereof). One major reason I am doing this is so that when I am too old to do this sort of thing, I will be able to look back on this and it will help me remember the adventure...
