Re: April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

Are you shuttling cars with a friend or are you using some kind of drop off service? (I've heard that people who do the John Muir Trail can use a drop off service where they leave their cars in Lone Pine and then get transported up to Yosemite to start the hike and then are picked up at Whitney Por...

Re: April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

I recommend doing Kern Peak if you haven't already done it. What I've heard is that Kern Peak is one of the few major peaks which is not visible from any paved road. Not sure if that's 100% accurate, but it's likely to be so. You can start at the Blackrock Trailhead or the Cottonwood (or Trail Pass...

Re: April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

This trip didn't happen for multiple reasons besides the park closure, but hopefully will reschedule this plan for next spring. This will be my first full spring without a DV trip since 2011. I may not make it to the park at all this year, but I do have an August one-way High Sierra Trail trip plann...

Re: Closed

I'm still hoping to be there in late April out in the back country, alone.....I hope it is still allowed at that time.

Re: Telescope peak in late April?

Significant snow is expected over the next couple of days, so that could greatly affect what will be there in late April.

Re: Telescope peak in late April?

Should be very doable, unless there is a significant storm between now and then. (Last year the road was closed at that time due to damage from flooding.) I usually rent a small SUV and have no problems driving up to Mahogany Flat. I haven't needed the 4WD, but the extra clearance is nice to have. ...

Re: Telescope peak in late April?

I will be arriving in Vegas on april 19th around 9am. I have scored a reservation for havasu falls in AZ from 22nd-25th. That gives me 3 days to play around with,so I was thinking about possibly driving straight to DV from the airport and staying there a night and possibly hiking up telescope peak ...

Re: -45 degrees F in October in Utah...wondering....

It just occurred to me that an obvious place to check for this sort of thing would be Ubehebe Crater. It has a similar depth to Peter Sinks (a little deeper)....dry climate....only thing it lacks is high elevation. Would be interesting to compare the rim and the bottom on a cold, clear, calm morning...

Re: April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

No, I'm pretty much resigned to approaching from the south, via Porter Peak (which I have already climbed)! Probably from the end of the road in Mormon Gulch on the south side of Porter. The end of the Porter Mine Road is an alternative starting point, but I don't even know if that road is open to ...

That is ambitious, to say the least! I'm just hoping I can get it together (and have suitable weather at the right time) to finally climb Sentinel Peak this season!
Yeah...will see how it goes!

Are you planning on going via Panamint City?

Re: April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

That is kinda insane. Good luck pulling it off. Thanks :) If I can do the really long 1st day, I should be in great shape. If I can't, I should know it in time to turn back. Whitney took about 14 hours to go its 21.4 miles (and its down is no picnic and takes almost as long). It is roughly the same...

April 23-27: Roadrunner Route

One of my bucket list hikes is the day hike version of Badwater to Telescope. Another is what I call The Roadrunner Route. Fortunately, Badwater to Telescope is part of the Roadrunner route: 1) Set up a "just in case" water cache near Trail Canyon Rd/West Side Rd, and then a campsite at Mahogany Fla...

-45 degrees F in October in Utah...wondering....

It was -45F this morning in Peter Sinks, Utah....about a 1/2 mile away and about 300 ft higher, it was about -4F. The terrain allows this huge difference at night in calm winds. This got me to wondering..... Does DVNP have any areas where this sort of thing could occur--a large temp difference withi...

Re: November Visit

The Eureka Dunes are usually accessible by any vehicle. The road is usually washboarded, so that can be annoying and make you go pretty slow. There will be people at the Mesquite Flat dunes and Badwater. For Badwater, hike a mile or two out and you will be beyond almost everyone. The dunes cover a v...

Re: August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460 (and, oh yeah, Bald)

No problem! I found one from Telescope that turned out much better than I thought. From Telescope, just look directly over Sentinel and slightly to the right. I had zoomed in for 10460, Porter, and Sentinel and was blessed with San Gorgonio by accident. I had to darken this shot a lot, but very plea...
