Re: April 19-23

I'm sorry to say, due to the thunderstorm that hit Hanaupah Canyon on April 19, I ended up behind schedule and did not have time to get over to that portion of the canyon. It will have to happen at a later date. More details to come in my trip report which I hope to post in the next day or two. A li...

Re: May 12-19, Telescope and Panamint City

On April 21, I did the final steep ridge with spikes, an ice ax, and a trekking pole. I personally would not have felt safe without at least the spikes and a pole. But several people older than me (50s probably) made it up with normal shoes shortly after I did. Some fresh snow fell up there April 19...

Re: Two reasons why I love Death Valley

Do you have any closer up shots of the upper Panamints around Telescope? I'd like to have a better idea of how much snow I will be encountering next week.

April 19-23

Getting psyched up for a trip next week! It will be much shorter than my usual trips, but hoping to enjoy more exploration of upper south fork of Hanaupah Canyon. I did a little of that last year, but only a short distance south of the main upper ridge.....I want to get further south this time, and ...

Re: May 12-19, Telescope and Panamint City

Be aware that very large rodents are in Panamint City, so take that into account (and hantavirus risks) if you are considering sleeping in a cabin.

Re: May 12-19, Telescope and Panamint City

Sounds great! There will probably be some snow left. If snow is blocking the trail, the main ridge that goes up to the false summit should work great. What are you planning at Panamint City? The road up Sourdough to the Hall Canyon divide has awesome views. I did Sentinel Peak via Panamint Pass and ...

From the park website:

"The main cause of death in Death Valley: More people die in single-car accidents than by any other means."

Re: Pictures of sheep in Fall Cyn

I could only look at the first picture, but definitely saw her! I've only seen sheep once in all my trips to the park, and it was in Marble Canyon, which has a lot of similarities to Fall Canyon.

Re: Newbie mistakes, sheep in Fall Cyn, and a shout-out to Steve Hall

The newbie mistakes that you make, and survive without major effects, are some of the most valuable experiences you can have. I made a bunch of them in my first DV backpacking trip and each one of them has stuck with me and prevented me from making them again in ways that could have been more costly...

Re: Tuber Canyon

I was able to drive into upper Hall a few times before they closed that road. That was my favorite road in the entire area. It was a crime to shut it down IMHO. Here are some pics of the upper canyon: http://www.dvplants.com/SITES/JAIL/ (Same page as previously posted, but just look at different pi...

Re: Hiking Death Valley - Second Edition

I have the second edition, but not the first. Michael Digonnet says, in the acknowledgements to the second, that additions include "...Moonlight Canyon and Funeral Slot Canyon, and the unlikely dunes in Sand Canyon." I don't know what other additions he made. The second is 546 pages long, if that s...
