Try Dante's View. You can drive a paved road to 5475 feet above sea level. There are good sky views in all directions.
Yep, if you aren't planning on camping at your observing site this is a great spot.

Re: Stargazing with a telescope

Hello all; I plan to bring my 10" dobsonian telescope to death valley this weekend (Aug 11/12 nights). What are one of the best locations in the valley to view the sky? I am Ok to travel to higher elevations if need be. Please free to join me if any of you happen to be around the area and wanted to...

Re: Owlshead Microwave Tower and DV phone service

My understanding is "American Tower" finds the location, procures the land, builds access, brings in the utilities, builds up the structures and then leases the backbone access to anybody to install equipment. They also manage the complex. In this case it was AT&T that found the location, procured t...

Re: Owlshead Microwave Tower and DV phone service

Thanks for the link to that video! As to the Owlshead tower the only info on potential removal I could find with a quick search was in the Wilderness and Backcountry Stewardship Plan from 2012: "An abandoned microwave repeater and associated buildings at the end of the Owlshead Mountains road will b...

Bugs right now?

Anyone been up around 4000-6000 ft in the park recently? How are the bugs? I'm usually not a springtime visitor so don't have a lot of experience in the buggier time of the year. Going to be up around White Top Mtn Rd in the Cottonwoods. Thanks!

The "per vehicle" fee system has never made much sense to me. A van with 12 people comes in for the same price as a car with 1 person. To be fair in many parks it is in fact vehicles and not people that are having the biggest impact. That's why many parks have banned vehicles entirely and gone with...

I'll be curious to see what they have changed. The NPS has gone semi-insane with closing off mine entrances in some places. A lot of dollars spent on closing some really remote stuff and making it very unsightly in the process. In other spots they have done a good job of maintaining the character of...

Found another useful source: http://modis-snow-ice.gsfc.nasa.gov/snow_cover/ From there you can grab a smaller more detailed quad of the region of interest. You can then click on that image and download higher resolution files of both reflectance and snow cover and then overlay them in an image proc...

THat's a great image but I'm not quite sure how to interpret it. How do you see snow vs. clouds? One hint is clouds have shadows and snow doesn't. High altitude clouds won't correlate with high terrain and upslopes, snow will. Low altitude clouds can form from orographic lift which can confuse this...

One question, I'm having trouble figuring out the mud hills just west of the Saratoga Spring turn off you mentioned. Are you referencing the very final turnoff to the Spring that's about 1 mile from where they are, or the turnoff from Harry Wade Road? Just trying to get that figured out. Turn off I...

So elevation makes a big deal in how cold it gets at night in the winter, so valley bottoms at lower elevations like Panamint or Saline Valley are your best bets I suspect. Give Racetrack and Hidden Valley the skip. And Eureka as well, about 3000 ft and further north it seems to get very cold there....
