Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Your tires won't hold you back from going up into Dedeckera Canyon from the dunes. Just going to have to take your time and pick your line well on the shelf at the beginning if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I've gone that way.

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Make sure you have a good, full-size spare (also w/ KO2 tire) ... plug kit, compressor, and good jack. You should be fine on almost everything in and around the Park – biggest constraint will be your own driving capabilities & comfort. I've done Lippincott in a stock 2nd generation 4Runner without m...

Re: Hiking Pole Reccomendations

I used a set of aluminum house-brand ones from REI for years. They eventually gave out and I replaced them with Black Diamond's finest carbon offering. If I had to get another pair, and didn't have access to a Black Diamond discount, I'd probably just do REI again as they're reputable and will repla...

Re: Scotty's Castle road repairs in progress

Bonnie Clare Road (the 8-mile road in Grapevine Canyon that passes Scotty's Castle) is indeed under construction. The contract is scheduled to be finished in July. However, the NPS has determined it is not safe to reopen either the Castle grounds or Bonnie Clare Road until some other major projects...

Re: Three trips worth of finds

Thank you for sharing these photos. I'm not much inclined to search out petroglyphs and alignments in the Park (or elsewhere), so being exposed to them this way is great for me. Also appreciate your respect for the sites.

I was just at Boxcar early April. Condition is fine compared to previous years. Log book showed frequent visitors.

Re: Lithium mining at the edge of Death Valley

There's a map in this PDF: https://eplanning.blm.gov/epl-front-office/projects/nepa/120541/168871/205522/Appendix_C_Biological_Assessment_Panamint_508.pdf Thanks for the heads up. Just drove through that exact area and I figured it'd be right around there. Wonder how much this would impact access t...

Can anyone point me towards a map of where in Panamint Valley they're looking to do this?

Re: Moose sighted in Death Valley

It's funny ... I've only seen the upgrade to the convenience store at Furnace Creek so far – and while it's really nice and resort-y – both times my friends and I felt a little uncomfortable (and got some side eye for sure). Everything was super clean and nice, the people around us were talking abou...

Re: March 2019 trip

All in all, another great week out in one of my favorite places. This trip marked my 30th year of hiking in Death Valley at least once a year. BRAVO! Thanks for taking the time to share your trip & photos, always a good read. I've always wanted to check out Titus on foot (or bike) when it was close...

Re: Flooding and Lake Manly today?

3rd gen 4Runners are the best!! My parents bought ours shortly before my third birthday, and it has travelled on most of our family vacations---unsurprisingly, it now has gone over 280,000 miles. I'm hoping to take it on more adventures after I finish graduate school (which is taking up much of my ...

Re: Pleasant Canyon Road conditions?

Unfortunately I didn't hit Pleasant Canyon Road when I was down in D.V. at the beginning of the month, but I can offer the anecdotal (at best) info that going through Goler was challenging enough in a modified 4Runner, but I did not run into any areas that seemed like recent weather had made them wo...

Re: Emigrant, Wildrose, South Park, and Warm Springs Roads

Just did Goler + Mengel –> Butte Valley –> Warm Springs Canyon Road –> West Side Road on April 3rd & 4th. No reason you couldn't drive a stock SUV from West Side Road to Geologist's Cabin if you took your time. No clearance or technical issues whatsoever, just go at a comfortable speed and pick good...

Re: Finally visiting Goler / Mengel / Geologist's ... advice?

Well, made it through Goler / Mengel and had a fantastic day & night in Butte Valley .... but managed to tear my MCL the next day in Slit Canyon, so no Stateline for me. Thanks again for all the info and I'll be sure to visit Stateline next time I'm down there. Trip report(s) to follow!

Re: Thoughts About Metal Detectors

Just out of curiosity, what do you think is being removed from places like Mojave Preserve, Death Valley, etc., that is metal based? Sadly I remember being a kid and finding / taking arrowheads in Northern Nevada. Haven't chanced upon one in decades, since I was far from the only one "picking & pull...
