Re: Emigrant, Wildrose, South Park, and Warm Springs Roads

Just did Goler + Mengel –> Butte Valley –> Warm Springs Canyon Road –> West Side Road on April 3rd & 4th. No reason you couldn't drive a stock SUV from West Side Road to Geologist's Cabin if you took your time. No clearance or technical issues whatsoever, just go at a comfortable speed and pick good...

Re: Finally visiting Goler / Mengel / Geologist's ... advice?

Well, made it through Goler / Mengel and had a fantastic day & night in Butte Valley .... but managed to tear my MCL the next day in Slit Canyon, so no Stateline for me. Thanks again for all the info and I'll be sure to visit Stateline next time I'm down there. Trip report(s) to follow!

Re: Thoughts About Metal Detectors

Just out of curiosity, what do you think is being removed from places like Mojave Preserve, Death Valley, etc., that is metal based? Sadly I remember being a kid and finding / taking arrowheads in Northern Nevada. Haven't chanced upon one in decades, since I was far from the only one "picking & pull...

Re: March 2019 trip

Right? I was shocked when I drove by the Willow / Sidewinder parking area and saw at least a dozen vehicles in there. I didnt mention it in my report, but this was the most people Ive ever seen in Death Valley by far. All of the main lots were overflowing and we were sharing Fall with about 20 or s...

Re: Flooding and Lake Manly today?

Love your "goofy video" of the river crossing. Be careful going too fast into deep water because I did that once and tore up the plastic front wheel fender linings of my truck. Oops! Yep! Most of the plastic wheel well lining in my truck has been trimmed out, but I did manage to knock out a clip in...

Re: March 2019 trip

@Tacoland - I am sure you have some great photos as well. I remember you talking about the Willow Creek - Sidewinder loop, did you do that one? That was on my list but I ended up not having the time for it because I wanted to check out these places with the water. Unfortunately I didn't get to revi...

Re: March 2019 trip

Top shelf report and photos to match. I was also in the Park for four nights in the middle of March, oddly though none of my pictures are nearly as nice as yours! Thanks for taking all the time to put this together and share with everyone here. Cheers!

Re: Finally visiting Goler / Mengel / Geologist's ... advice?

In the north end, I think you might enjoy camping at Stateline ghost town. South of Gold Point, so you have quick and easy access to US95. You can get to the site via Oriental Wash, or a round about way via Tule Canyon. There is a maintained cabin at Stateline. My favorite spot to camp is on a late...

Finally visiting Goler / Mengel / Geologist's ... advice?

Hey folks, popping down to D.V. in less than a week and higher than expected temps have me abandoning my plan to hike in the Owlshead Mountain area. I've got four nights and was thinking of cruising down and spending the first night near Ballarat, so I can tackle Mengel Pass for my first time in the...

Re: Painful! Dry-nose desert syndrome?

Born & raised in the high desert, I did a two-year stint in Eugene to finish up my undergrad degree. When I moved back to the desert I had nose bleeds for almost a month due to the lack of moisture. I used to use Neosporin on a Q-tip to coat the most roughed up spots inside my nose, but for me it wa...

Re: Amateur radio use in DVNP

My Garmin inReach Explorer+ uses an internal battery, charged via USB, and when I'm in the backcountry I leave it powered off. Only power it on to send an evening message to people back home where I'm camping for the night so they know my location and that I'm okay. Using this method I would assume ...

Re: Road damage

Currently showing a lot of stuff closed. If you were wanting to do Wildrose today, you'd be out of luck, with Emigrant Canyon, Upper Wildrose, and Lower Wildrose closed. I don't think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that Upper Wildrose or Emigrant Canyon are ever in the state of "officially close...

Re: Flooding and Lake Manly today?

Dang, those are some great photos. The seven-hour drive to Death Valley from where I'm at pretty much guarantees I've got to take whatever weather happens to be there when I arrive. Worked out well this trip with overcast days at the beginning, before turning into rain and a bad wind storm. Anywho, ...

Re: Road damage

I cruised down Lippincott and exited via South Pass at speed without a hitch. There was a spot or two where some rocks had fallen onto the road in the South Pass "pass" section, but nothing I couldn't skirt around with ease in a 4Runner. This woulda been on Wednesday the 13th when the Park had the r...

Re: Amateur radio use in DVNP

Satellite. Satellite. Satellite. I use a CB radio in my truck to communicate with others in my group. Limited distance and of zero use to anyone when trying to get help. You might be able to ping someone with Ham radio due to its extended range, but I wouldn't trust my life on it. Just used my Garmi...
