Re: Man Rescued From Mine

https://ktla.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2020/03/MineShaft-Crop.jpg Here's a larger picture of the rescue scene if anyone cares to speculate on location. Considering everything going on right now and the strain on medical / emergency services, pretty poor timing to be messing around with abandon...

Re: Joshua Tree NP closed due to you-know-what

Thanks for the heads up. I know Yosemite is closed and I'm sure Death Valley would be as well if it didn't have a highway running through it. Closing all services (sans gas stations) and eliminating park fees right now seems like a recipe for stress / disaster down in DV. Hope the rangers are holdin...

I received a mass email from Garmin two days ago confirming that SOS signal on satellite device will still work, followed by this: Note: Please recreate responsibly and consider the pressure currently on the emergency and medical community as well as local quarantine mandates that may impact rescue ...

Re: Closed

Just saw Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all of California to stay home. Was already feeling kind of weird about 5 days of backcountry with everything going on and this is the nail in the coffin.

Take care & be well, my friends.

Re: Chloride road conditions

Man ... first trip I ever made to Chloride Cliff 15+ years ago was total Amateur Hour. We ended up 4x4ing into Chloride in the dark on a bitterly cold night in March. Woke up in the morning and saw what we drove in on – completely oblivious. Ha!

Re: Closed

Glad you got the chance to do the Willow / Sidewinder Loop, but ... sorry the rest of your trip was ruined. I saw some wildflowers last week here and there, but spoke with a guy who said down near Ibex was having a great wildflower bloom. Also noticed when driving up and out of the Park via Father C...

Re: DV Roadtrip....

Their website has info on backcountry camping at https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/backcamp.htm Where is dispersed backcountry roadside camping allowed? "Along dirt roads at least one mile away from any paved road or "day use only" dirt road. Camp only in previously disturbed areas and park you...

Re: Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

4. Explore the NE corner after entering from Big Pine/Death Valley Road (avoids Willow Wash, but also has snow risk due to elevation) If you drive in through Big Pine Road and then leave the park via Daylight Pass or even the dirt roads to Gold Point / Lida Junction you'll be fine. Saline Valley (N...

Re: Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

Ahhh, thanks for the link. Never come in through that exact route, but no reason it shouldn't work. Where were you thinking of camping 2nd night? Personally I'd probably come in via Bishop / Lone Pine, and then go back up via Nevada, just for a change of scenery in the 6hr drive. I also prefer the f...

Re: Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

Hrmm, Oasis? Jog my memory as to what / where that is? Sorry! You'd have a good day of driving down 395 and could take road from Big Pine into Eureka or Hidden Dunes, and get a nice walk or hike in that evening. In the morning you could always drive all the way to the mouth of Dedeckera / Steel and ...

Re: Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

Hey fellow Renoite .... I was just down in DV a week ago. Driving from Lone Pine to Eureka Dunes, I saw the "Road Closed" sign was out at the turnoff for North Pass ... and this was before all the storms that just hit us, most likely turning stretches of those roads into a mud bath. And mud is worse...

Re: Death Valley (unofficial and official) place names map

That's a fantastic ..... and ... intimidating map, Kauri! Check out all those blue and green pins! I'm partially inspired to do up a map with pins of everywhere I've been just for my own records. But less inspired now that I've seen yours. Headed down on Sunday to check out two new spots for m...

Re: Christmas 2019: Sand, Sun, and Snow (Pic Heavy)

What a great trip report, thanks for the photos & sharing your experience. I've always wanted to spend Christmas in DV but the short daylight hours stop me short. Have a great time in the Steens & Alvord, and make sure to stop in at Fields for a burger and a beer sometime. Great country in that area.

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Your tires won't hold you back from going up into Dedeckera Canyon from the dunes. Just going to have to take your time and pick your line well on the shelf at the beginning if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I've gone that way.

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Make sure you have a good, full-size spare (also w/ KO2 tire) ... plug kit, compressor, and good jack. You should be fine on almost everything in and around the Park – biggest constraint will be your own driving capabilities & comfort. I've done Lippincott in a stock 2nd generation 4Runner without m...
