Re: Eagle, Birch, and Jail Springs

Yes, I've been to Eagle Spring. Just hiked up the trail from Mahogany Flat and took the old spur trail shown on at least some maps. From Eagle Spring down it was steep, but not too bad.

Re: Telescope from Hall Canyon?

Here's a topo map which approximates the route as I recall it. The X is the furthest point I ever drove up the canyon. The ? is the approximate location of the mine that I reached. BTW, I added three additional pics. I was disappointed that I didn't have lots more pics from that hike. Nowadays I'm c...

Re: Telescope from Hall Canyon?

I have some old pics from 2006 at the bottom of the page here: http://www.dvplants.com/SITES/JAIL/ On that hike I was able drive to the Rowland Cabin and hike up the old road that goes straight up the main canyon a few miles to a mine that was at the end of the road. Not sure of the exact elevation,...

Re: trip in March

Not sure that I'd use 8 year olds as the standard for rational behavior. They're fearless, and only learn from their mistakes. I didn't think I was making a point regarding "rational behavior." I was thinking in terms of physical ability and relative danger. I don't think the route is too dangerous...

Re: trip in March

China Garden probably requires 4x4 or at least high clearance. It's longer to get there via the town of Darwin than coming up from the Darwin Falls parking lot, but the trip up from the parking lot and down into China Garden has a few moderately rough spots that at least require high clearance. As f...

Re: trip in March

Darwin Falls' upper reaches are extremely treacherous. Unless you are an expert talus/scree/exposure champion with no fear, it's a no-go. I made it about half-way once before chickening out. Be very careful if you do go. I completely disagree. Not that I wish to be disagreeable, but I don't like ex...

Re: Park Closure

I have a friend who works for the park service at the Grand Canyon. His job is fully funded through the shut down since his job is considered essential. However, interestingly, he told me that the state of AZ keeps the park open through the duration of shut downs because it makes a big difference to...

Re: Water Source info?

Regarding water near the Weston Cabin: I have an eight mile loop which I've done about six times which I haven't done since 2013 which starts at the saddle between Happy and Pleasant. It heads down to the Weston Cabin and then it goes up the MIDDLE fork of Happy. Basically the Weston Cabin is locate...

Re: Weird GPS Error

So, at this point I'm of the opinion that the anomaly was caused by some kind of experimentation going on at the base. The odd thing is that this was late on a Sunday afternoon and I would have thought that experimentation would be done mostly during the work week. My GPS unit worked fine last week ...

Re: Weird GPS Error

Late to this discussion. I think it would take some powerful juju to corrupt the data in the unit once it had been logged. Causing a local or wider area disruption of the GPS signals such that position is erroneous, erratic, or just won't get a fix is what I would expect from GPS jamming. The annte...

Re: Panamint City backpack.

I just got back from a quick dayhike up to PC. Lots of graffiti. I don't recall seeing any graffiti on my last trip up there four years ago. Anyone know how recent the graffiti appeared? The worst item was a large banner painted up right below the chimney. Otherwise there were lots of small items al...

Re: Weird GPS Error

Cleared the memory on the GPS and tested it out this evening. Works fine. So, it must have been something to do with a signal received during the hike, which really makes me curious about what happened. Unusual readings I've encountered before, but I've never had the data corrupted to the point wher...

Weird GPS Error

So, I'm a little ways into the return leg of an eleven mile hike and I notice that my Garmin Foretrex 401 display is malfunctioning. The current time and time of sunset fields are normal, but my elevation reads "------" and my distance says 100. The last I checked I was at about 5200' and about 6.8 ...

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

I've done Charleston, Whitney, and White as dayhikes. Whitney would be the only one that would be difficult for me currently at age 57. I could do it, but it would be a bit beyond my comfort zone. A couple of years ago I did Langley as an over-nighter. Again that's one that could be done as a dayhik...
