Re: Keene Canyon-Big Bell and Wonder Mine Dayhike Loop. Dec. 3, 2019

Did you go up the canyon all the way from the bottom to the Big Bell and out the main Keane trail, or some other route? There's also a great loop you can make following old miner trails down past the Big Bell Extension (?) mines to the Johnny Cyty mill - did that last year after having not been on ...

Keene Canyon-Big Bell and Wonder Mine Dayhike Loop. Dec. 3, 2019

Fantastic Dayhike loop up a pretty canyon with plenty of dryfall scrambling, a visit to two major mine sites, and a descent down on of the longer trails in the national park. Any issues or concerns are diligently described in Michel Digonnet's: "Hiking Death Valley". Only recently restored and reope...

Ibex Hills-Black Mountains dayhiking to summits Dec. 2, 2019

Three shorter but highly enjoyable summit scrambles on the south side of Jubilee Pass Hwy, 178 in the south end of Death Valley National Park. Straightforward. Lots of info out on Ibex Peak 4751" standard route. Most cars can do the 1.5 mile approach road. Small camping area at end but slopey. https...

Corkscrew and Artist Palette Peaks, scramble dayhikes Nov 2019

Nov. 21st: Lots of info out there for Corkscrew Peak. We possessed really none of it but I remembered needing to head for the spring identified on the south slope in the Topo. From near there we picked up a trail that led us rising through fog, sleet, and graupel squalls in a corkscrew fashion aroun...

Cool to get to do the Chloride to Keene parking one way! I really liked that area and am very pleased it reopened.

Re: Death Valley 9 Days Trip Report

I’ve come across a few of them here in northern Nevada. If I remember correctly, they have something to do with wind. Its a rain collector gauge. The spikey things are to keep wind from influencing the available precip to the cylinder and thus reduce inaccurate readings. The wind is measured by the...

Re: Marble-Cottonwood (side slot) lollipop loop Nov 17-19,2019

Hi Midwest Desert Rat, 1. I believe we made it through any more potential narrows as the terrain seemed to back off and leave the limestone. I am confident it goes. I wanted to scout for the potential to access Sand Flat from this side canyon someday. 2. It was my 2nd visit to the 4th narrows. The b...

Marble-Cottonwood (side slot) lollipop loop Nov 17-19,2019

A three day backpack with good water at Dead Horsre Canyon Spring and Upper Cottonwood Spring. Both had a flow for yards. We chose to modify the standard loop in order to add some challenge and uncertainty but mostly to avoid road hiking of lower Cottonwood Canyon. Thus, we went up Marble Canyon and...

Re: Ashford & Desert Hound Peaks

This would be a fun one to repeat in your footsteps. I always wondered if on the Scotty's descent you were able to reach the spring before the dryfall impasse or was the impasse above that? If that is the case how did the miners access it I wonder? Perhaps the spring can be accessed for the other fo...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

I'd like to mention that I'm very happy that folks are using my reports to help plan their trips, and let me know if there are any questions about what I've written. I haven't been able to visit DV for 18 months now (since I've been helping to take care of my father, who has a neurological disabili...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Barely hit Cottonwood in this larger loop from Emigrant Campground/Bathrooms, avoiding the road: The dryfalls at the beginning in Canyon 7 are bypassable. http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8022827 loop shows unconnected out of Lemoigne because a jeeper gave us a ride to avoid crossing t...

Looking for Full Corridor Canyon info

Hi all, Has anyone hiked completely through Corridor Canyon from Round Valley, past the Ubehebe side canyon access, to the lower gorge. Or vice versa. I am particularly seeking beta on the "high fall" 1/2 mile north of where Ubehebe side canyon hits the actual corridor. Digonnet says an exposed ramp...

Re: Stovepipe Wells to Racetrack Playa (via Marble Canyon) - Feb. 22-26

Thanks, John. I took a quick look, and I think peak 5923 (?) above is the black peak you're talking about. Yes, it looks like there are more reasonable routes this way, like the blue line or just north of that. I had been looking at routes like the red one, coming from the Big Fall Canyon area. But...
