Re: Mountain Lions around?

They're around for sure. In 2016 two members of the park staff had inadvertently scared a mountain lion out of the brush in Six Springs Canyon. It seemed lethargic as it ran out of the brush they were walking on and then it ran up to the ridge before disappearing. Also back in 2013, a cougar took do...

Re: Hunter Mountain Road to Marble Canyon?

Some folks go from Goldbelt down Marble. Thick brush at the start/Goldbelt, but smooth sailing from there. As far as the road, last I heard was on March 8th where it was completely snowed in. Pretty sure it rained and snowed over this past weekend too, so not likely a good sign. If you're looking fo...

Re: Original Monument Entrance

Yeah that website even has the original 1933 one too. Check it out. http://npshistory.com/brochures/park-a-f.htm

I personally love the groovy 1965 version....and ...well.. ALL OF THEM.

Original Monument Entrance

In the 1937 brochure to Death Valley, there's a photo of the original monument entrance. Anyone know where this would have been? To me the terrain looks similar to that of around the Inn, but the Inn was opened in 1927. So I really don't know. Also Check it out. What do you think? https://i.imgur.co...

Re: Old West Side Road vs Wingate Wash Road - help!

Maybe this will help? From the 1933 USGS map. That triangle of roads isn't quite there anymore....legally that is.

Re: Hiking trail for Big & Little Dodd Springs

There is definitely no signage on this. I've always wondered about hiking it, but never got around to it. If you do go, enjoy it, and yeah Caltopo is AMAZING. One note of caution is to be conscious about potential marijuana grow sites over there. If you see any small cans of chemicals especially wit...

Re: Mo water questions

I can confirm Deadhorse. Usually a few large puddles and a shallow stream for about 100 yards. Consistent all winter and shoulder seasons. I wouldn't count on it in the summer.

Hey John, these are awesome but tough questions. One thing you could do is try the park hydrologist. He's a nice guy, here's his contact info.

They need the money, but this is ridiculous. Congress should get off their corrupt behinds and actually fund the darn parks!

There's no conspiracy BS here where the park closed it for no reason. A visitor died there in 1984 after falling down a shaft. Additionally, heavy metals were found in the easily airborne sediment of the tailings. The park did invest money to clean up the area and to restabilize openings. Here's mor...

Besides the main mine complex and the stunning tramway with awesome views from the tramway road, there's lots of other cool stuff in the area, much of it mining related, that's all been closed off for the duration of this project. Hopefully that was just closed because the NPS felt that it was too ...

From a ranger. "High clearance from Warm Springs Camp to the Geologists Cabin is needed-I took my Wrangler (no lift) and it scrapped the loose rocks on the ground even when I was driving 10mph. -10/2/17" Last report for Galena is from March when it was smooth sailing no issues, but it has rained sin...

I can assure everyone that not a cent is being wasted by NPS in Death Valley. Local partnerships with the hotels make for a win/win for everyone. Regarding other travel expenditures, those are typically handled by a travel contractor where...again have been negotiated on a national level. Lastly..an...
