Re: Death Valley Ravens

They seem to really love the sleeping circles too :). Thanks for the pix and I really enjoy watching these intelligent and energetic birds in the park. I've come across many of these "sleeping circles" and wondered what they were. Some of the larger ones with big boulders are thought to be hunting ...

I was camping at Texas Spring and turned it into a loop hike of about 15 miles along the base of the mountains.
Do you have any images to share?

Re: Dispersed Camping December

The Hole in the Wall area might be an option as well. Unless washed out the drive is shorter than Echo Canyon. I've never stayed overnight there but three out of the four times I've day hiked in the area there were several other campers all set up. There was still plenty of room for others.

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

I hope his absence makes space for more authors and photographers to share their romance with the desert. Thank you for giving me a voice for a moment to speak the truth from my perspective on the situation. Thanks again for stopping by here, adding clarifications, and especially for your last two ...

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

Jim made some really bad decisions that affected him as well as our family and the fans who admired and supported him. These decisions continue to affect him today legally, financially, and personally. I don't forsee him returning to death valley as anything but a tourist. I appreciate you coming t...

Re: Death Valley Jim - current status?

Never met him or communicated with him ... Last I seen published he was based out of California City. Jack Freer (a member here) did some research into him recently. He’ll likely chime in if he chooses. If anyone has a means of contacting DVJ, and is willing to PM me with it, I'm willing to attempt...

My knees could not hold up to that!
My knees are not the best with a history of meniscus repairs in both. Like most "seasoned" hikers, I love to climb up but pay the price when resisting gravity on the way back down.

Death Valley Jim - current status?

I have a sense that this thread may stir up some old controversy about Death Valley Jim (DVJ) so if our forum administration wishes to delete this thread, I'm totally fine with that. When I discovered Death Valley National Park about six years ago I remember searching around the Internet for more in...

Re: Scotty's Castle road repairs in progress

Thanks for the news and images, Candace! I too share the same caution when challenging Mother Nature.

Those images show some major construction works being set up so I do hope that they take their time and do a great job in the new highway.

Re: Saline Valley Warm Springs Management Plan

I just received this in the May DVNHA newsletter: • The vehicle support facility would be removed. I'm curious about the removal of the "vehicle support facility." Does this mean there will no longer be a place for vehicle repairs in the Saline Valley? (Disclaimer: I haven't yet been to the hot spr...

Moose sighted in Death Valley

That's right, The Ranch at Death Valley has a moose on the loose inside The Last Kind Words Saloon. Actually, it's a moose head and antler rack mounted above the entrance to the saloon from the buffet dining room. I really like the interior decorating in the saloon except for Bullwinkle's head and a...

Tom Arnold - Steve Hall - Explore expanded park area

I just enjoyed reading Steve Hall's fabulous trip report from March way out to the Quail Mountains and Spring. I especially liked Steve's first paragraph describing the preparation, goals, and intent of the adventure. They were lucky to capture so many scenes of wildflowers in bloom and the scenery ...

Re: Above Chimney Fall In The Funeral Slot

And that area is very colorful! There appear to be more colorful hills between the two main forks of Funeral Slot Canyon that can be seen from GE and which I'm sure are worth exploring. This thread has turned into much more fun than I anticipated and now has more mystery for me as well. How cool th...
