Re: Goodbye to Borax Haystacks & Shovel Town

IIRC they're only about 1/4 mile or so from the Badwater Road. Candace, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you've spotted the vintage roadway remains from Furnace Creek to Badwater? (Excuse my misspelling of canyon) http://salamandersociety.com/deathvalley/DesolationX1.png and http://salamanders...

Re: Wildflower potential

I guess the moisture didn't come at the right time this winter. I was in DEVA February 5-10 and this is the only image I was able to snap of any blooming plants. Taken at about 500 feet elevation on the alluvial fan between Salt Creek and Trellis Canyon on Saturday, Feb 8th. http://salamandersociet...

Salt Creek Cool & Clear

Wake up with the sun shining on the clear and cool waters of Salt Creek in Death Valley National Park on a February 2020 morning. I had the location all to myself even though later that day it was the turnaround point for about two-three hundred marathon runners. There were no pupfish to be found th...

Re: DEVA Updates From Feb 5th - 10th

The building in the picture is next door to the Happy Burro restaurant. I don't know if it is in use or not. Curious, so I called The Happy Burro to ask but no one answered. I then called The Exchange Club Hotel and spoke with a friendly staffer there who told me the following. 1. The old hotel nex...

Little Bridge Canyon Colorama & Artifacts

February 2020 hike from Devil's Cornfield to the top of Little Bridge Canyon with overlooks across Death Valley. Help identify vintage artifacts on the way to the mouth of the canyon. Military ordinance, rocket, or what? BTW - this canyon has got to be in the top five of colorful canyons I've yet ex...

Trellis Canyon's Cottonball Basin Overlook

Five years ago this month I discovered Trellis Canyon thanks to Steve Hall's fantastic website. During that hike on the way back down the canyon about a half-mile from the mouth, I took a right turn (east) up a major side canyon to discover even more colors in the stone. At this narrow, I happened u...

Re: DEVA Updates From Feb 5th - 10th

Do you happen to know what became of the "Beatty Hotel"? I think that was the right name it was the historic hotel that was moved there from Rhyolite. I am just curious because I did some remodel work on the place in the early 2000s. I'm not the best historian "in them thar parts" so I have no pers...

King Midas Artifacts & Memories of Harris Family

Michael Joseph Harris (Mike) worked the King Midas Mine with the assistance of his wife, Patricia and his oldest son, James (Jim) during the 1940s and 1950s. Some history and artifacts located downstream from the mine are highlighted here. Jim and his wife, Anna and Jim's son, Mike last visited the ...

Joe Moore - Flintknapper nearly dies in RV crash - update

Good news, Joe is recovering from his near-fatal RV crash of May 2019 and is now back flintknapping at Furnace Creek Oasis and the Visitor Center. Here's my February 7th interview with Joe.

Re: King Midas Treasure More Valuable Than Gold Within

Thank you for posting this hi-resolution image of the memorial at the King Midas mine (which will help preserve the contents of the letter for posterity). You're welcome Kauri. I'm working on a video tribute to The Harris Family and their work at the King Midas. Coincidentally, 68 years ago this mo...

DEVA Updates From Feb 5th - 10th

I spliced together a five-minute video of my miscellaneous activities in the park this past week. There is always so much to see and do I feel overwhelmed and when lucky enough to score some cool images it's even more fun. I have my usual string of trip report videos in process including, East Fork ...

Re: Retired Ranger Jay Snow Says It Best

"Well, Jews have Synagogues and Christians have Churches and you have Mother Nature". I thought that was pretty good, and agreed with her. Thank you for sharing such a heartwarming story. I shared Death Valley with my daughter and her three kids ages 12, 10, and 5 during October 2018. We had a grea...

Retired Ranger Jay Snow Says It Best

I just came across a video of retired NPS ranger Jay Snow describing his personal experience and sentiments towards Death Valley. To me, it's the most touching and reflective video I've discovered so far that mirrors my own love affair with Death Valley National Park. I believe that many here in thi...
