Re: Conversation with Jane Lakeman - DV Curator

I wonder what you would need to do to make an appointment to drive to the end of the road? Any ideas? I spoke with a park ranger about hiking Nevares Peak from Cow Creek. He explained that this is not possible for two reasons. 1. Cow Creek is for NPS staff only. 2. Nevares spring is the water sourc...

Conversation with Jane Lakeman - DV Curator

During my last visit to Death Valley the first week of December 2018, I was unable to personally visit with Jane Lakeman but I did have a productive phone call with her upon my return home. My intention was to access archives related to the Corduroy Road and Bridges that cross Salt Creek between the...

Re: Finally, summit Blue Mtn via BM - Corkscrew Canyon

I need to sit down and go through all your posts about Blue Mountain, and A) determine if it looks like something that's within my comfort limits and B) trace out the route with the goal of uploading a track or at least some key waypoints into a GPS! Candace, thanks for spreading the word about Blu...

I wondered if the plumbing issue might have interfered with the dinner preparations!
Well, let's hope he wasn't digging for the actual dinner preparations! LOL

Re: Gnarly Notch Anomaly Near Keane Wonder

... is it likely that the flood waters rushing from the slopes visible in the distance were hitting the bank of the bar and simply breached it? The notch crosses the bar at an angle consistent with the water flow direction... Thanks and I'll have to defer to Andrew (Gowergulch42) who currently majo...

Lights out in less than two minutes at Zabriskie

I enjoyed capturing some rare light streams on the ridgelines around Zabriskie Point as Mr. Sun called it a night and turned out the lights.

Eventually it will get abandoned and just be a dip along a ridge.
Andrew, I was hoping that you would be kind enough to provide some of your expertise to my questions. Thanks!

Muddy people at Badwater

Before heading out for my hike up Lower Bad Canyon from the Badwater parking lot I chatted up some folks who had vehicles smothered in light brown mud. They told me that they had come through Ballarat, explored the Goler Airstrip, drove over Mengel Pass and were now headed for the more northern part...

Colossal Lower Bad Canyon - stopped at 3rd dry fall

Just south of Badwater lies Bad Canyon's mouth leading to deep walls, crazy colors, dry falls and boulder ladders. With the rapid elevation gains comes spectacular views of Death Valley and the Panamint Range. Join me up to the third dry fall before stopping out.

Did anyone here at DV Net have their Thanksgiving Dinner at the Amargosa Cafe, and if so, how was it?

Satire leads to Flat-tired

"I have determined, through exhaustive research, that the smoothest speed for washboard roads is precisely 10 MPH OVER the point in which you lose control of your vehicle! " I laughed out loud when I read this, I assumed it was a clever satire with the dead giveaways being "exhaustive research and p...

Upper Bad Canyon - Really Good Time

Drop down into Upper Bad Canyon west of the trail to Mount Perry from Dante's View and return in a roundabout way December 2018. I got stopped at the top of the narrows but still so glad I made the effort. The Timbisha Red is spectacular in the morning light. The view from the westside ridge is uniq...

Re: Edmunds tests Honda Ridgeliner in DV

The journey is part of the experience in the desert, slow down and enjoy the ride. It seems to me that there is an ideal speed to drive smoothly over washboard roads. This depends on the wheelbase and wheel size. If you go just the right speed your vehicle will just his the tops of the washboards a...

Thanks and you're wise to take the more moderate route to the Borax Benchmark. The views are spectacular from the BM and even better from the summit of Blue Mountain.
