Death Valley Multi-layers of perspective

One reason I love Death Valley is the "layered experience." The layers and moods one enjoys from sunrise to sunset and in-between in the park keeps me coming back. This Mahogany Flat (2017) image captures the layers of what I am so feebly trying to express verbally. From the atmosphere, clouds, acro...

Re: hiker finds human skull

Fascinating and I'm glad you obtain those images. Those eye sockets look huge. So many mysteries in Death Valley.

Re: Rogers Peak Meditation

What's the best time to see flowers in the upper Panamints? Two years ago the third week of June I slept overnight atop Telescope for the Solstice and there were lovely wildflowers on the flats between Bennett and Telescope, but some were fading. The official DVNP bulletin on Wildflowers states: La...

Re: Vultures Buzz Death Valley Airport

Vultures sure get a bad rap. Agreed and I really enjoyed watching them as I approached slowly. I had no idea vultures lives in Death Valley, let alone that they hang out around Furnace Creek until I took a horse trail ride behind Furnace Creek and the guide pointed them out. Here's a video about th...

Re: Mosaic Canyon Road is closed through June 30, 2019

Good points on the positive side. While there last week driving through SPW I did notice heaps of heavy equipment parked a few hundred yards up Mosaic Canyon Road. I wrongly assumed that they were just parked there waiting to do some work on the main highways through DV.

Rogers Peak Meditation

Over Labor Day Weekend 2018 to escape the Death Valley heat up, I went to Rogers Peak as the sun set to the west and was bathed in a good feeling I had never, never, had before.

I'm a tech jerk not a tech nerd but wondering if a solar flare ever causes such disturbance? Also, if the military is trying to be discreet maybe they perform exercises at odd hours?

Re: Manly Beacon Light Show

Any comparison between the ascent from Zabriskie vs. your route? Thanks and sorry for not making the route more clear. The only way to summit Manly Beacon is from the Zabriskie Point side toward the east side of the saddle. Head west from Zabriskie, turn left or northwest on the Golden Canyon cut o...

Re: Manly Beacon Light Show

Looking at the west side of it now when hiking up from Golden Canyon I ask myself, would that be safe now? Not sure I should do it. Do you recommend it? Should I try it in a few weeks when I'm back? Cheers! The approach to the saddle that separates Manly Beacon from Red Cathedral is steep but not t...

Re: Manly Beacon Light Show

Looks like the footing up on top was a little sketchy, was it as loose as it looked? Thanks, and yes the footing was sketchy towards the edges. That's why I took a twelve-foot painter's extension for a camera boom, to get those over the edge shots down the Golden Canyon saddle trail. Returning down...

Manly Beacon Light Show

Scale the Manly Beacon to soak in a sunset lighting up The Red Cathedral, Golden Canyon, Zabriskie Point, Twenty Mule Team Canyon, and the Borax Benchmark - September 2018 This is not a casual scamper. It's much more difficult descending than ascending. This is my third time atop Manly Beacon and mo...

Re: Photo tour of Oasis 9-4-2018

So they say it will be completed by 10/22! What do you think? Just now Wednesday, Oct 4th 4 PM local time I spoke with the project manager who happened to be on site and he said grand opening maybe late November 2018? I'll post my images of the current construction status upon return home and bette...
