Re: Death Valley December 2017 Trip Reports

Thanks for your detailed trip reports. My favorite parts were those dark tunnels requiring a flashlight, the balancing rocks, the panorama shots and that "interesting rock" that you had not seen before. The area above Twenty Mule Team, around Corkscrew Canyon, towards Borax BM and Artist Palette dra...

Three Badwater Disk Vortexes Explored

Over Labor Day I had a blast in Death Valley exploring curiosities. I noticed in 2014 from Dante's View that there were large circles way below on the playa south of Badwater a mile or so. I noticed them again from Dante's View this September and so set out to explore. Now I have more questions than...

Re: Summer solstice on Little Blue - Artist Palette

How did you exit back to Artist Palette? John, I've been to the top of Corkscrew/Borax Benchmark and looked down into the Artist Palette basin but have never hiked from this vantage point way down to Artist Palette parking area. I believe that this is possible and may yet try to discover a non-tech...

Re: Blue Mountain awaits summiteers to register

new route is more accessible to hikers? Thanks and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I am in love with upper Artist Palette and what lies between that and the Borax Benchmark. The morning and evening light is just a kaleidoscope. Ok, I hope I can explain my two excursions to Blue Mountain in a w...

Blue Mountain awaits summiteers to register

Blue Mountain high above Artist Palette in Death Valley National Park now has a hiker registry box on the summit as of September 5, 2018. This hike is not for the casual explorer as the route is not marked and passes up, over or around six dry falls, two of which are rather technical to ascend and d...

Photo tour of Oasis 9-4-2018

The new Oasis appears to be coming along well. I'll miss the prior facility but the new one and it's courtyard will be a huge improvement. You decide for yourself.

Re: B2T2B, R2R2R, and Surprise Canyon comparsions

One major reason I am doing this is so that when I am too old to do this sort of thing, I will be able to look back on this and it will help me remember the adventures. My sentiments exactly and having discovered Death Valley late in life I feel an urgency to get out and about now while I can. I wo...

This is why I return to Death Valley

http://salamandersociety.com/deathvalley/Set-Dust-Storm-SPW9-3-2018.jpg Monday's (Labor Day - 9-3-2018) dusk dusty sunset from near the Beatty Cutoff looking over the Devil's Cornfield, Mesquite Dunes, Stovepipe Wells and Towne Pass. The wind was blowing so hard from the southeast that I had to ste...

One of my goals for this trip is to write a comparison between it and Badwater -> Telescope and back.
I am anxious to read your trip report and see your images. Best wishes on a splendid adventure.

What about Lee Flat

Lee Flat a few miles north of Highway 190 might be good unless there is some light pollution from Lone Pine or Bishop?

Updated photo of Panamint Dunes

John, Thanks so much for taking the time to post your image of the Panamint Dunes from high atop the butte. This is just what I was hoping to see because I love to see the ridge lines of the various mountain ranges. I took the liberty of Photoshopping your image a bit to bring out the contrast and c...

Re: Death Valley weather

Ranger Aly Heare at 130 degrees in front of Vistors Center 7/24/2018. Note that Aly says it was 127 in the shade so there was a three degrees difference in the official vs. the VC display?

Re: Panamint Butte Fatality in DV

Views from the top were impressive of the Dunes, valley, and all the way to Whitney. Thanks for sharing your lovely morning image from the butte looking west. Do you happen to have an image from the same point of view but more of a northwestern angle capturing the Panamint Dunes in the soft morning...
