Re: Death Valley National Park is CLOSED – April 4, 2020

Depending on what kind of car you're driving, Hunter Mountain and the high country around it are wonderful places to be. There's a surprising amount of stuff to see up there, but you have to do your research. I have a 09 Outback with AT tires. I think Hunter Mountain is passable in summer. I wouldn...

Re: Death Valley National Park is CLOSED – April 4, 2020

If the valley floor is scorching hot when you visit, I would heartily recommend the trails up in the Panamints. I've done Wildrose, so almost anyone can do that, and there's always Telescope Peak. Good luck! Did Wildrose last winter. Looking to climb Telescope and do a Panamint City backpack if I h...

Same here. My buddy and I were planning to go to the Racetrack this week. I guess, we'll have to wait until May???
I just hope it's not scorching hot when we're finally allowed back. Otherwise I'm waiting till October for low desert fun.

Re: Death Valley National Park is CLOSED – April 4, 2020

Great. I was finally planning on getting down into Saline Valley this next weekend. My plan was dispersed camping and off trail hiking... I'm safer in Death Valley than I am at home. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Re: Has anyone here ever tried climbing Ubehebe Peak from Saline Valley?

Anyway, any insight on climbing Ubehebe from Saline Valley would be much appreciated. Thanks. This is a fun idea which I contemplated when standing atop Ubehebe Peak which I had climbed from the Racetrack Trailhead. I believe this is not only doable but a great way to spend the day. This video show...

Re: Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

North Eureka Road out to Oasis often washes out at the Willow Wash and Cucomungo Canyon confluence. So much so that the road signs indicating caution has been painted “DANG WASHOUT.” I’ve often found the road cut as much as 10’ deep with no signage except for orange cones across the road a few feet...

Hrmm, Oasis? Jog my memory as to what / where that is? Sorry! You'd have a good day of driving down 395 and could take road from Big Pine into Eureka or Hidden Dunes, and get a nice walk or hike in that evening. In the morning you could always drive all the way to the mouth of Dedeckera / Steel and...

Hey fellow Renoite .... I was just down in DV a week ago. Driving from Lone Pine to Eureka Dunes, I saw the "Road Closed" sign was out at the turnoff for North Pass ... and this was before all the storms that just hit us, most likely turning stretches of those roads into a mud bath. And mud is wors...

Has anyone here ever tried climbing Ubehebe Peak from Saline Valley?

Hello again. I'm leaning towards spending my whole weekend in Saline Valley and I'm getting an itch to try and off-trail it from Saline Valley to Ubehebe Peak. Has anyone here ever tried climbing Ubehebe from the Saline side? Here's an idea for a "trailhead"... https://caltopo.com/m/MFKB. I'm prepar...

Re: Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

I drive an Outback myself. No way would I attempt Dedeckera in it based on the pictures. Your mapped route from Saline Valley Warm Springs to Eureka Dunes goes through Dedeckera Canyon and Steel Pass. In any conditions, that would be a nearly impossible route to do in a Subaru Outback, due to groun...

Proposed north DV loop coming in North Pass and exiting Eureka Valley Rd. March 20-22. Is this route passable?

Hey there, I'm thinking about driving down 395 from Reno this weekend and entering north Death Valley through North Pass, coming down through Saline Valley and finding a campsite (suggestions welcome!) Then the next day I was thinking of heading back northeast towards Eureka Dunes (or somewhere in t...

Re: Camping in Panamint Valley/along Wildrose Road January 2nd?

You probably know this already but you can make a nice loop over Rogers Peak. Of course you can take the Telescope Peak trail and hop up Rogers at Arcane Meadows, and then down the access road. But from Rogers it is nicer to just head down the ridge to the east. Halfway down you'll hit the road at ...

Re: Camping in Panamint Valley/along Wildrose Road January 2nd?

Current report (which may not be updated because of the shutdown) says that the road is closed beyond the Kilns, so if you want to camp at Thorndike or Mahogany Flat, you have a long walk up from the Kilns. Or, you can hike one mile away from Emigrant Canyon Road, or one mile away from Wildrose Roa...

Camping in Panamint Valley/along Wildrose Road January 2nd?

Hey there, I'm looking for a place to throw up a tent the night before climbing Rogers Peak on January 3rd. With the government shutdown, I'm a little confused by what's available. Is the Wildrose campground still open on a first come/first served basis? If not, any recommendations for dispersed cam...

I would also like to know if anyone has been out there recently. I'm headed there on Sunday and I can't find any recent reports.
