Re: Dispersed Camping December

I think the cabin that's in the Saline Valley area is Boxcar Cabin. I stopped by and visited it about 2 years ago. There were clean comforters there, nonperishable food, and plenty of good books to read. I didn't stay there, but it looks like it has some history connected to it: https://squattheplan...

Re: In between hikes - lots to see and do

Ha ha, love Tim Conway & Carol Burnett in your raven video! Thank you for the info - I'm looking forward to exploring that boulder field. I don't make it out to wonderful Death Valley more than once a year, as I live in the midwest, but I always anxiously await my next trip out there. May possibly m...

Re: In between hikes - lots to see and do

What a wonderful video, thanks for sharing this!! And that was really cool with the raven.

What part of the park was that boulder field in at the 2:22 mark? I haven't seen that before.

And I really appreciate learning from everyone's knowledge and experiences. Lol. I wish I could get wifi in the Saline Valley. MojaveGeek, yes, my pic is from Kal Canyo...

I didn't know that about smartphones and wifi and not having to pay for cell service - thank you, that's a great idea!

Re: Backcountry Navigation

Thank you, that is great info! But I only have an old flip phone and won't be able to get a smartphone. The flip phone surprisingly has good reception in parts of Death Valley and other remote places I've been to.

Backcountry Navigation

Hi Everyone, I'm going backpacking east of the Saline Valley in a month, and am hoping to make it to the racetrack starting from Grapevine Canyon. I don't know a lot about GPS devices, but would like a device that can track my distance, show a map of where I am, and can direct me back to my route if...

Re: Ticks in Death Valley

Wow, the tick didn't react at all when it was sprayed? That's scary! Did the repellant you were using contain deet? Or was it another chemical that didn't seem to repel the ticks?

Re: Caching supplies east of Saline Valley Area

Those are some good points, about burying it near a distinctive landmark, and maybe having a marker nearby but not right next to the stash. It would most likely be in very remote parts of the park if I would ever do it, so hopefully little to no traffic near the cache. I think canned food is a good ...

Re: Caching supplies east of Saline Valley Area

Thank you everyone for the info, it's greatly appreciated! Yeah, it was definitely the water that was so heavy. I have a 65 liter pack and am quite thin & petite, and I need to train more with it full of water before the next time I try. I spoke with a ranger in February about springs, and she said ...

Caching supplies east of Saline Valley Area

Hi Everybody, I'm still very new to backpacking/backcountry camping and was wondering - has anyone ever "cached" or buried supplies out east of the Saline Valley area for an extended hike of several days or more? Or in any other part of the park? If so, how did it work? I was there in February and m...

Re: Ticks in Death Valley

Good to know, thank you for sharing that. The ticks I had on me in Quail Canyon, east of the Saline Valley, were the first ones I've ever seen in my life. I agree, they were annoying.

Re: Rattlesnake season?

When I got too close to a mojave green one time, I just stopped, took a very slow couple of steps backwards, and then it went on its way.
