Re: Finally, summit Blue Mtn via BM - Corkscrew Canyon

Very nice routefinding! And quite a trek.

Interesting area. I've not had time on our trips to explore much there, but perhaps on our upcoming trip I'll try a milder hike somewhat to the northwest, starting on 20-mule team road.

It looks like your route follows rough country! Congrats!

Re: West fork of Kaleidoscope Canyon?

Thanks for the reply -- Steve's trip report on Kaleidoscope mentions an 8-foot dryfall, but he climbed it and took a look at the upper canyon. So it can be done. I agree, it may be possible to cross some of the ridges between the canyons. Those aerial views can be darned deceiving, but all in all th...

West fork of Kaleidoscope Canyon?

Laura and I are putting together a list of places we'd like to hike on our annual DV trip this spring. One possibility is an overnight backpack to Kaleidoscope Canyon. I'm curious about the west fork, which splits from the Kaleidoscope section about a half mile from the canyon mouth, at coords 35.93...

Re: Indian Tacos - Mesquite Tree Distress

This is an older post, but... Mesquite under stress. That explains something. Last spring Laura and I visited a small box canyon north of Redwall, which, on Google Maps, showed as a green oasis. But when we got into the canyon, nearly all the mesquite were dead. I wondered what had happened. https:/...

Re: Lower Gila Box, Dry Canyon

Yes, MojaveGeek, peccaries... the ones we saw moved like elastic lumps of pure muscle and gristle. Of course, they're game animals, and most of them act like it. When we surprised them they usually blasted out of a thicket at a dead run, and only paused when they had cover between us and them. Where...

Re: Lower Gila Box, Dry Canyon

The underlying cause was my inattention. I saw them coming and going from a hole in the cliff, and ambled over to take a look. I think that when they saw movement they decided to defend the hive. I can still run pretty fast over rocks, if bees are chasing me.

Re: Hiking the Mojave Desert by Michel Digonnet

I picked up a copy of Digonnet's book at Kelso Station, in the Preserve. Laura and I had just one night, passing through, and we stayed at the Mid Hills campground. Had a nice walk to a couple of granite knobs, colloquially referred to as Sunrise Rocks. (At sunset, when we were there, the rocks are ...

Lower Gila Box, Dry Canyon

Been awhile since I posted on the forum -- I've been busy with retirement, moving into a new city, etc. Laura and I drove around the southwest in August (2018). One of our camps was in the Lower Gila Box conservation area, in Arizona, not far from the small town of Safford. We explored a small canyo...

Re: Namibia

Wow. That looks like a trip of a lifetime. Some time ago I noticed Fish River on Google Maps, and kind of ogled it on screen, thinking what it would be like to see that country in person. Your photos are great!

Yes, those are great pictures. Those views across the wide valleys to the mountains are some of the most spectacular shots of DV, in my opinion.

Re: Second canyon north of Grapevine Springs

@ netllama: I think Laura and I took about 4 hours round trip. We spent a little time in the side canyons; on the other hand, it would depend on how much farther up the canyon you decide to go.

I'm flattered that people like the write-up. Thanks!

Second canyon north of Grapevine Springs

I've not found a description of this canyon, so I'm posting one. I don't know if it has a name, either, which ... erm, may be why I couldn't find a description! Or it could be that this minor canyon has not been deemed worthy of notice? At any rate, here's some info on this spot. Route description, ...

Re: Echo Canyon and Hole in the Wall Canyon Question

There are some camping spots on the Ashford Mine road, where it comes into to the low hills about a mile to a mile-and-a-half from the Badwater road. As I recall, the road that far is not bad; the worst bit is the last three-quarters of a mile up to the parking area for the Ashford canyon hike. And ...
