Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Ah, stick to 4 Low then? Even when dealing with the sand before the canyon when coming up from the Eureka side? I figured I was just gonna keep it in 4H and go around 20-25 to keep from bogging down in the sand. Thats what I did on my KLR, it got squirrly but i didnt get stuck. Never had issues in ...

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

Do you think I can do steel pass? I think its called dedeckera canyon thats the max I want to to, im just worried my grand cherokee is too wide, or its not tall enough or my tires are too small (30x9.5) with my klr I just popped it up and over. but I know I need to be a lot slower, put it in 4 low....

Lots of Marmots at gate to WMP. Just make sure to check coolant level and hoses before leaving. Marmots have a history of gnawing on hoses to get to that sweet but deadly concoction.

Re: What is my Jeep's Capability?

I second above comments. I've managed Goler/Mengel in the 90s with a stock Chevy S10 in the days before they did major work in the lower canyon. Did most other roads in a stock Tacoma TRD. Until you get experience, your Jeep sounds more capable than you are ready for.

Re: 1911 Topo Map of DV and Ballarat - 100 year perspective

The narrow guage railroad north of Keeler went away in 1960.

The standard guage railroad in the lower right had rails removed for several miles south of the Lone Pine depot in 1984, the rest of the line abandoned south to Searles and rails removed 1998-1999.

Re: M 7.1 earthquake in Ridgecrest

Glad to hear. My primary concerns for Trona residents was adaquate water and electricity for swamp cooling and refrigerators. Good to hear of aid efforts.

I still haven’t found any real info on the status of the plant, other than a chimney with a lopsided cap.

Re: M 7.1 earthquake in Ridgecrest

In the Landers quake, my wife, parents and I were camping at Quaking Aspen campground west of the Kern River north of Kernville. Felt the quake pretty good there. Couldn’t pick up any radio in the car until the radio station in Lake Isabella came on air at 0600, the quake being the focus. My wife an...

Re: M 7.1 earthquake in Ridgecrest

Woke up early this morning to news of a new quake, 7.1 magnitude (I am visiting Boise, so it’s an hour earlier). I expect this one is going to hurt.

Re: 6.4 earthquake in Ridgecrest

I doubt it seriously affected the plants, but likely things were shut down. During the years I worked at Trona (1987-2004), there were several moderate quakes without any major issues. The power is out, so the two large power plants at Argus curtailed putting power in the SCE grid. The major crack i...

Re: 6.4 earthquake in Ridgecrest

The video of the burning home at https://www.cbsnews.com/live-news/earthquake-california-today-6-4-magnitude-hits-near-ridgecrest-today-2019-07-04-live-updates/ is across the street from my old house when I lived in Ridgecrest. My home was on the north side of California at Holly Canyon; the burning...

Re: Missing Mt. Whitney Hiker: Last Picture from Badwater

From what I read, it appears he crammed Whitney into his itinerary. The article mentioned he needed to be home and at work the following day; his plan was to summit, drive to Vegas then take a night flight home and go to work the following morning. Apparently he summited (eyewitnesses). My thought w...

Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

When I lived at Big Pine, I would stop in at the Esmeralda Market in Dyer. Gas prices were always considerably lower than in the Owens Valley. Miscellaneous sundries were far cheaper than KMart in Bishop. Good place to get a cup of coffee, sit on the bench and visit with store employees and other st...
