Re: Backcountry Navigation

Back to your original question. Any map based, hand held GPS will do what you asked for. Tell you where you are, where you’ve been, help you backtrack, how far you have gone and plenty of other useful data. Just do some comparison shopping to find one that fits your budget. Also comparison shopping ...

I’m internet challenged ... isn’t “reddit” the sound a frog makes? :dezdan:

Re: The Mystery of the Death Valley Germans - solved

How about a first person account from someone involved in the search and recovery.

Re: Has anyone hiked across DV at Badwater?

The owner of the website and author is a retired Carson City Sheriffs Department detective, whom I met after he sought me out for consultation in this case. We still communicate almost daily. It was a sad but fascinating story.

Re: Has anyone hiked across DV at Badwater?

Here is a link to an interesting account of an elderly man in poor health who hiked successfully across to the west side in the middle of August with temps in the high one-teens. He didn’t return. Nor did he wan’t to ...

Re: Living in Beatty

Intersting question. You might get a whole slew of intersting answers. There is at least one board member here who has lived in Beatty, thus can give a better point of view than I. However, I have lived in small towns all my life in the Mojave Desert and the Great Basin, thus I can give my observati...

Re: Water Source info?

Of the springs on your list, I have only experience with Pleasant, Anvil and Coulter. But it has been about 21-22 years with Coulter and Pleasant, and 18 years with Anvil since passing by. I imagine drought years since have impacted them so that my description may not be accurate. Anvil: Yards below...

Re: Park Closure

It was mentioned on the morning and evening network news. Didn’t mention DVNP in particular, but if it is happening elsewhere, then it might be just a matter of time before it happens here.

Re: Park Closure

I’ve heard people are taking advantage of the lack of law enforcement and are running around off road and tearing up stuff.

Re: People watching while Geo-watching

I have no desire to shoot professionally. I tried that road once. I quickly learned that wasn’t for me, as the techicalities drained the fun out of taking photos. The composition is what pleases me. And, as Candace mentioned, is all the photos to look at later. I’ve got tens of thousands of my image...

Re: People watching while Geo-watching

Yes I understand the point you allude to. Due to force of a near lifelong ingrained habit, I’ve viewed my world through the viewfinder, then later the low res LCD display of early digital cameras, and whatever acronym smart phone displays are now these days, flitting around from place to place in my...

 That’s probably because you were trying to get that rental Hummer H3 off those roads before it self destructed ... ;-) Yeah, we had radios. All of us had CBs but you, all of us including you had FRS, so that is what we used except for occasional talk on the CBs. I was having transmission probl...

Re: Edmunds tests Honda Ridgeliner in DV

I generally stay slow on the washboards. Takes strict discipline when you’re going less than 25mph and just getting to the rock cairn marking the road up Lippincott and you are headed to the springs. Once, trying to keep up with a group of board members after dark in ‘08 heading to PSR after running...

Re: Edmunds tests Honda Ridgeliner in DV

The tracks are of the Trona Railway. In the scene just previous you can see the Trona Pinnacles and Pilot Knob. The Trona Railway runs along the pinnacles to interchange withe the Union Pacific at Searles.
