1) I am taking a tour of the Titus Canyon. There are two time slots available for the 3-hour tour, one at 9 am and the other at 2 pm. Which one would provide better lighting for photography along the route? (Usually late evenings are best but I don't know the situation at Titus, hence my question) 2...

I am indeed renting an SUV to get to Death Valley. But I do not want to risk taking it to Racetrack since rental companies have restrictions about off-road driving.

I think you'd be better off renting a SUV (doesn't have to be 4x4) than going through the trouble of finding a tour operator or a private party. I rented a 2008 4Runner (2-wheel drive) from Enterprise Rent A Car for a trip to DV two weeks ago and it did fine. Racetrack Rd was pretty badly washboard...

I doubt there's a tour operator yet. There's probably a steady stream of people heading out and back there though. The place is becoming more well known and visited all the time. I'd allow more than an hour for shooting too. The rocks, at least the interesting one's are a good walk away from the pa...

Is there any enterprising tour operator who offers drives to Racetrack Playa and back? We (3 of us) will be staying at the Furnace Creek Ranch at the end of April 2009 and would like to go there.
