2014 Jan DV trip, DV Wash north from Mesquite Springs CG

I wanted to do a test hike of Death Valley Wash, from Mesquite Spring campground south, in preparation for a future multi-day backpacking trip. However, when the campground host stated that the hike north in the wash was very scenic, to Ubehebe Crater road, I decide to do that one first and make 2 d...

I'm always alert for cloudy sky at sunset, with the sun out and setting over the mountains. Probably can't count on cloudy skies in June. But, this past 2014/Jan trip, one sunset at Mesquite Springs nearly knocked me over - Gold and Red color of the Grapevines. The right conditions make for beautifu...

DV Trip 2014 Jan, Mummy Canyon and nearby area

My first hike was to Mummy Canyon, its natural bridge, and some of the surrounding area near the Death Valley park entrance sign on HWY 190. I want to thank Steve Hall for his report on Mummy Canyon. And please, as Steve mentioned, the park service has requested, park your vehicles at the park entra...

Thanks for comforting thoughts. Gowergulch - no, didn't walk out there (one of my canceled hikes), so I know nothing about water there, nor did I hear anything (I never asked). Mojave, thanks for the info; hope to do a long hike starting at Stovepipe one of my trips. Right now, it's the Mesquite Spr...

Just there last week. Construction starts at Grapevine Ranger Station and they said it was for 8 miles up Bonnie Claire Rd (the road toward Scotty's Castle). For me, the 'construction' was that the road was simply unpaved. I never saw one piece of construction equipment, but I only went as far as Ub...

DV Trip 2014, Jan 28 - Jan 30

Just got back from Death Valley today. My trip was cut short - my Mom passed away Thursday 1/30, and I stopped everything to get home today. I did get three days of hiking done. 5 further days will just have to wait until the next time. I'll be writing trip report later. Two of the days were spent h...

Thanks Gower, Mojave for the good comments. Single digit cold blast comes around here often in a decade. But the wind chill of minus degrees is rare. Don't know the endemism of yuccas here. Got a couple from a neighbor 18 years ago, now I got like 75 plants. I certainly wouldn't say yuccas are like ...

My yuccas didn't like the arctic blast

Topic is flora - yuccas. That arctic blast thru Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this week did a number on my yucca plants. Several of the taller yuccas have fallen over; others bent in half. I trim my yuccas yearly, so there's only leaves near the top; most of the stalk is exposed. Had cold temps here bef...

Kauri, really terrific reports, photos.
Thanks for your efforts.
There's a lot to review; really good hikes, and it gives folks a few ideas too.

Looks like you had a real nice vacation in Death Valley; that's the most important thing.

Thanks again.

Thanks Steve.
Two good photos, two real nice features, must be another scenic canyon.
Looks like nice honeycomb weathering, or whatever they call it, producing classic imagery.
And good location for an underpass, in a fall !!
Enjoy your trip!
And thanks again!

Good question. Sure, I know, that's a tough one, your basic untenable situation, but, yes, Shut 'er down, don't let anybody in, protect it, until this govt house-to-house, hand-to-hand combat is over. Sure would hate to see WWII Memorial spray-painted with graffiti, or otherwise damaged, with not en...

Oh, so it's alright for someone to trespass or occupy my cabin, land in N.Ga. mountains when I'm not up there, without my permission, because it's 'closed' when I'm not there? I've got enough worries about wacko sovereign citizens. Ah, I know, that's my private land, and we're talking about governme...

C'mon Moly Man, silvrzuki77, do we need to hear that same tired ol' anti-Obama, anti-Affordable Care Act harangue here? I don't think that's what this thread is about. But Moly Man, I do appreciate your comments on visiting the Park while it's closed, for sure. I definitely apologize about my questi...
