I've stayed there a couple of times, and it was pretty good. The owners are very nice. There isn't much in the way of amenities in Beatty, but it's a good stepping off point for DV.

What a drive! That first pic even looks somewhat Death Valley-like. Did it get very dark at night? I had dull evening light very late on my Alberta trip a few weeks ago. It made sleeping a little bit challenging.

Terrific photos, az! Qtpfsgui is a great free program for creating HDRs. (Photoshop has also gotten progressively better for doing HDRs.) While tripods and in-camera exposure bracketing help, they are not at all necessary. Some photographers will use only two exposures in order to bring out details ...

just about every MAJOR trail junction in the sierras i have ever come across (hundreds) has been signed, Who said anything about junctions? The issue here is trailheads. DV is pretty distinct in that it does not have lots of trails crisscrossing one another. I agree with you on the JMT being overcr...

so by putting one sign pointing out the general direction of a trail, now people are going to be safe out there huh? if people dont have a general clue or direction of where they should be going at the trailhead, do you think it will get better for those people when they leave the trailhead and ent...

There doesn't seem to be too big a difference between the different alternatives. I don't necessarily agree that trailhead signs = "dumbing down" the park either. In some cases, they would be helpful in giving some general clue or direction. It's all a matter of degrees, and nothing in these plans s...

I usually make reservations with multiple rental car companies at the Las Vegas airport. There is no penalty for doing this. If one company doesn't have what you need, move on to the next one. That said, many of the four wheel drives at those places don't have very good tires. As some here can atest...

Terrific trip report! I'm slowly working my way through all three days. For every four or five great rangers, there are indeed one or two lousy ones. It is amazing how helpful the good ones can be. However, the red-haired female ranger in DV who gave me "help" one day presented a situation that bord...

I spent a few days roaming the southwest last week. I made stops in Zion, the Grand Canyon, and Death Valley among other places: Grand Canyon and the Colorado River at Hermit Rapids, after hiking down the Hermit Trail. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4007/4574891210_421908421d.jpg Zion Canyon from Ob...

I am going to rent from them in a couple of weeks so I spoke with the person who runs the place yesterday, and he is an extremely knowledgeable and helpful guy. We talked about some of the different routes in the area, including some of the more remote camping spots. It sounded like they have indeed...

I just considered possibly taking Hunter Mountain Rd. out from the Racetrack. Anyone with a clue how long the trip is to PSR or 190 from the Racetrack via this route? Thanks.

I will be coming in from Vegas and indeed be renting from Farabee. I've had one bad experience off-roading with a regular rental car so it's made me a little bit wary of trying again. But I'll save Eureka Valley for another time then, since it might be doable in a regular car. I would love to do Lip...

If you had 24 hours in a jeep, where would you go?

After roughing it in a rental sedan for my last few trips, I've decided to splurge on a jeep rental for a weekday towards the end of April. I've already been out to the Racetrack, but I was thinking of doing a trip back there coupled with stop at the Lost Burro Mine or Titus Canyon. I'm an amateur p...
