Lee Flat is a great place. Another wonderful aspect of the variety that is Death Valley. Getting to Nelson Cabin in a full size long bed may be tricky once you get up to the cabin. It is pretty tight up there. Also temps get cool up at that altitude during the winter.

...Finally, the book, Silver Stampede by Neill C. Wilson also shows a picture of the original road up Surprise Canyon. The book was published in 1937 and may be hard to find. Thank you for the book reference. I'd not known about this book. A new addition to the DV library. Should arrive tomorrow. T...

While I haven't read this whole thread I will say that after I switched to AT/T from Sprint I noticed MUCH better coverage in Owens Valley. I liked most of my Sprint features better but it comes down to safety and being able to communicate with friends/loved ones.

Thanks. Already picked up the new version. I like the cover from the old one better though. But we all know a book should not be judged by its cover.

Investigators think they know who tore up Death Valley's fragile Racetrack Playa in an SUV http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-death-valley-damage-20160927-snap-story.html What do you want to bet that they were drunk when they did it? I think you're giving them too much credit. Probably s...

Investigators think they know who tore up Death Valley's fragile Racetrack Playa in an SUV http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-death-valley-damage-20160927-snap-story.html That article also states: "...huge panes of ice pushed by light winds episodically sail into rocks..." Just wanted to note that a 2nd Edition for this book was released this past April. The book description does list more pages than the 1st edition. If anyone has info about the changes to the 2nd edition please share. Thanks. https://www.amazon.com/Hiking-Death-Valley-Natural-Wonders/dp/0965917835/re...

I too have pictures somewhere of Piston Point from one of my trips. If memory serves the actual place was before the steps and up higher on the plateau section of the Steel Pass/Dedeckera Canyon road. Heading from Saline it was before the steps of Dedeckera. It was removed by the NPS.

There is no signage unless it was recently replaced. The park service took it down several years ago.
