Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

@MuleQueen - I completely agree and would prefer there not be much cell coverage at all for the reasons you stated. But the NPS seems to have taken the position that having more coverage is likely to save lives and I tend to agree with their logic. There have been a lot of SAR calls originated by ce...

Re: Strange music on 89.9 FM Driving east from Lone Pine to Death Valley

Can’t listen to the clip, Flickr wants me to log in and I don’t have an account. It’s possible someone is using the FM band to transmit something over a short range. There are cheap low power devices that transmit in the FM band meant to connect a CD player, phone or whatever to the FM radio in a ca...

Re: A few beginner's question

Ah, yeah Irvine is much more of a hassle. Harder to sneak out of the basin before traffic on a Friday from there as you need to get over the Cajon Pass on the 15 pretty early and you have a bit of a drive before you even get there. Folks up by Glendale, Pasadena and even downtown LA have the option ...

Re: RIP Death Valley pay phones

There should be a way the NPS can designate this a public safety necessity and require that the land-line pay phones be kept. The NPS has taken the approach of trying to increase cell coverage instead which is much more useful and has been quite successful so far. The landlines have really been of ...

Re: A few beginner's question

Glad your first trip was a success! Don’t rule out exploring DV while in Grad school in LA. Depending on how your classes and potential lab/research schedules work out you can into the Panamints and even Stovepipe for the weekend by leaving Friday afternoon and coming back late Sunday. Depending whe...

Re: A few beginner's question

Crackers, chips or anything like that is plenty of salt. Sports drinks don’t need to be that much of the mix. Say 1/4 would be plenty. The real risk is that if you were to actually be exercising in that much heat you’d need to drink lots of water. If you ate nothing salty and drank only water all da...

Re: 1911 Topo Map of DV and Ballarat - 100 year perspective

2. The toll road over Towne pass was built in the mid-1920s so indeed did not exist at this time. 3. Big Four Mine wasn’t developed until 1940s though there were undeveloped claims in the area before that. 5. Baldy is Rogers. It is south of Wildrose Canyon so cant be Wildrose. The peak unnamed on th...

Re: A jet crashes in the DV area, several onlookers injured

@Wingman if you are going to fight back at things the I’d recommend fighting for the backcountry - e.g. Butte and Racetrack. It is easy to reduce visitation there - stop grading the dang roads and problem will quickly resolve itself. Completely within the control of the NPS to do this (unlike SV roa...

Re: A jet crashes in the DV area, several onlookers injured

That highway and rest area have been there a long time. Plus it's a National Park! I've driven that road dozens of times over the last 40 years. I didn't start seeing significant use by the Navy til 4 or 5 years ago. We have watched with concern in recent seasons as whole new parking areas and use ...

Re: A jet crashes in the DV area, several onlookers injured

I haven’t seen any official report on the cause of injuries but one article claimed they were minor burns. Which sounds like the result of a post impact fireball as the same article claimed impact was directly below the viewpoint. You’d just need to be nearby to get a minor burn if that is what happ...

Interesting, thanks for posting! I saw a lot of activity at the southwest end a few weeks ago when I was up around Ubehebe - but of course not clear if they were working on the road or the castle.

Re: Tandem Jets Skywriting Panamint Valley

Wow, you got some great footage - thanks for sharing it. By the way, why is it "the Jedi Transition"? Low level training route for military aircraft that goes from the Owens Valley to the Panamint Valley roughly following the 190 and entering Panamint Valley via Rainbow Canyon. Pilots refer to Rain...

BTW, where those road closures due to conditions or staffing issues with the government shutdown?
The status page says West Side closed due to mud.

Re: Mosaic Canyon Road is closed through June 30, 2019

Seems a bit strange - are they saying you can't walk up the road? The road is pretty straight line, but it's only 2.3 miles. To add an extra 5 miles to the hike... maybe they mean round trip? My guess was that the road is now a construction site now and they don't want people walking through a cons...

Re: Goler open all the way to DV?

Hanaupa Canyon had a grow operation going in it earlier in the year. Might be a NPS cam monitoring the road.
