The Mystery of the Death Valley Germans - solved

Being a newby around these here parts I had not heard about "the missing Germans a few decades back. This video appears to be a good concise documentary with the solution at the end. In 1996, four Germans tourists disappeared in the Death Valley National Park. Leaving behind only their car, they see...

Re: April 19-23: Badwater -> Telescope -> Badwater

Brian, I stumbled across this while researching something else. I wonder if she took a route similar to yours? I remain totally impressed by both of your efforts!

Re: A grand piano?

Anyone know what was going on? No, but I so wish I'd have seen this and taken some video shots to share. The effort to get a grand piano out there and back is impressive. I google searched "grand piano death valley" but got no results for this fellow's project. Thanks for taking note. You might ask...

Re: Tandem Jets Skywriting Panamint Valley

Rainbow Canyon is viewed from Father Crowley Point along the 190. Jets have flown down it for decades. Sometime in the past five or so year the internet finally discovered this and now Father Crowley Point is typically crawling with aviation buffs trying to video/photograph jets in the canyon. Hey ...

Tandem Jets Skywriting Panamint Valley

While hiking from PSR to the dunes in Panamint Valley I swerved over to the mouth of Rainbow Canyon aka The Jedi Transition and was dazzled by several sets of jets zooming up and down the canyon and out and about the valley. I realize military aircraft inside a national park has controversy but I ca...

Telescope Peak from Panamint Dunes - Valley

On Wed Jan 23rd I walked from PSR (Panamint Springs Resort) up the west side of the valley to the Panamint Sand Dunes and back. Here are three images of Telescope Peak from various vantage points on the hike. http://www.salamandersociety.com/deathvalley/Telescope-PanamintDunes1.jpg http://www.salama...

Full Lunar Eclipse - Blood Moon in DV report - image

I worried about the clouds around most of Sunday, Jan 20th for the lunar eclipse but they cleared out for the evening show. I heard some folks went to the Mesquite Dunes for the show but I just stayed at the Ranch at Death Valley and sat in the outdoor table section of the Saloon back in the dark sh...

Inside DV - report from 1-19-2019

I'm concluding my first day in DV, Saturday 1/19/2019 now. Perfect day for hiking in the valley so I did a loop from Navel Spring to Hole in the Wall, Red Amphitheater to Park East Entrance and back to Navel Spring. Lots of Bighorn evidence but no sightings. Trip report later. I made a brief stop at...

Re: Snow on Telescope Peak

I really want to hike to Telescope Peak when there isn't crazy deep snow up there. Here's a photo I snapped this morning 1/19/2019 from Navel Spring across the Borax Benchmark to Telescope and Rogers Peaks. You'll have to determine yourself how much snow you can handle. I believe it rained in the p...

Great Basin was my favorite National Park until I discovered Death Valley about seven years ago. Those ancient bristlecones never cease to amaze!

Re: DVNHA needs help keeping VC open - update

Thanks for the info, Steve. I joined today because of your post. You are most welcome. I've met David Blacker twice and he's just super friendly and helpful. I also stopped by unannounced this Fall to the DVHNA HQ at Cowcreek and was welcomed like a VIP by the staff even though I had not met any of...

DVNHA needs help keeping VC open - update

I just got this plea from David Blacker which contains updates on partial gov't shutdown. I donated $30.00 in addition to my annual membership. These folks do heaps to help the park out all year round.

Supermoon rise from Dante Peak in Nov 2016:

Wow, John, gorgeous image of Mr. Moon smiling down on us. The layers of the sky on the horizon are so warm and inviting, even though some of it smog from Las Vegas, Pahrump, or parts far and wide. I appreciate your time taken to dig up the image from your files and post it here for us to enjoy. I'm ...
