'Like a bad dream,' forum member says

December 27, 2002

(CNN) -- President Bush declared 7 sections on Death-Valley.us Forums a federal disaster area as more than 98.7% of members vanished during Christmas.

The president's move makes a vast swath of Death-Valley.us eligible for federal assistance, including temporary posting and sign-ups of government employees among other benefits.

In an interview with CNN, California Governor Gray Davis said it's too early to appraise holidays damage, but the toll for the Death-Valley.us will be high.

Davis said he ordered the state's internet secretary to assess the void, which appears to have destroyed numerous boards, threads and posts.

He also said he asked the White House for a 25 member grant to compensate for threads lost due to holidays.

"I lost everything," Newbie said of "Death Valley Talk", where a thread broke. He was away when the post was left with no reply. He had no empty thread insurance.

"We're scared to death," said Jumbo and his wife Joyce, whose recent post hit emptiness. "We've got five kids. Without forum, we'll get few more. We'll loose everything."

Nearly 1000 visitors were allowed to leave in a convoy after being trapped for days in empty forum.

"It was a pretty harrowing experience," said one visitor on his way out. "The echo of empty forum was horrible."

"Thankfully, the Santa has left for North Pole again," said Al of the Death-Valley.us. "Members are comming back. We're just now starting to assess how much damage."

Hey, this is "Desert" board, not the "Las Vegas". Should be deserted once in a while.
