Super Snow - Super Bloom?

Post by Death Valley Dazed » Mon Mar 12, 2018 5:24 am

2018 February's snowstorm covers Telescope, Tucki, Pyramid, Chloride, Perry Peaks in Death Valley National Park. Will this lead to another super bloom?

I liked the shots of Corkscrew with snow, as well as the Keane Wonder with snow and snowing.

As for your question. It remains to be seen. Having said that, superblooms are a result of numerous inter-related phenomena, not just overall precipitation.

Not only has this been an apocryphal snow year for DV, they haven't had much in the way of overall rain since the lat summer storms rolled through. This year's bloom is going to be average at best. That said, even an average bloom is a pleasant thing to see.

For a good bloom, there must first be at least one good rainstorm in September/October. Then regular rains throughout the winter.

There's some info here: https://www.nps.gov/deva/learn/nature/w ... ndblooming

And the more recent a superbloom, the less likely another one will occur for a while. This is because seed supply builds over time and a superbloom depletes it.

If this were going to be a superbloom year, you'd have heard about it by now. I was in the park the first week of March and saw pretty much zero blooms. (TR coming). I spent a week in Gold Butte the same week I was there last year, some of the same places, and the comparison was stunning - almost zero bloom this year.

Same. There second week of March and there was nothing much to report, which I kind of liked .... Super Bloom years are a total zoo in the park.

As of the last week of March, the flowers look about like 2017 IMHO. The beavertail, cholla, and cottontop cactus we saw were not in bloom yet.

We arrived 3/22 about 6:30 pm and 79 degrees. There were some flowers coming down Beatty Cutoff and along 190 to the ranch. There was a lot of flower greenery along the sides of the road. Later in the week some of this flowered and there were patches of flowers beyond 190 into the rocks. Really when we left 3/30 in the am things were picking up. I think 190 was the best this year. Much more than last year and we come yearly. Some patches down Badwater Road, some up Warm Springs Road. Quite a bit of small flowers just taking off up Sidewinder. So many had to watch where we stepped!

I was happy for what there was!
