Just noticed this:

Anyone have more info on exactly what they're doing out there that necessitates the closure?

That's going to be closed through the whole winter tourist season. I think that's going to suck for a lot of people who want to see Mosaic Canyon.

Major construction work on the water line for Stovepipe Wells which crosses the road is the reason for the closure. Canyon still open if you don’t mind walking (about 2 miles and 1000ft elevation to get to the mouth from 190). It will probably be a unique opportunity to visit Mosaic without it being full of people I guess!

Good points on the positive side. While there last week driving through SPW I did notice heaps of heavy equipment parked a few hundred yards up Mosaic Canyon Road. I wrongly assumed that they were just parked there waiting to do some work on the main highways through DV.

Maybe time for me to make a return visit! It's been a few years since I hiked up there.

I'll be back for the week before the 49er's. I'm thinking of getting my mountain bike around the construction and riding it up the road then, locking it up at the trail entrance. Might be nice to re visit the canyons without a lot of people there. Not that I'm every really bothered by crowds in DV as I'm one of them.

I took this pic of the closure on Nov. 23.

Note strategic use of the phrase, "Area closed to all traffic." Does that include foot traffic (or mountain bikes up to the canyon mouth)? I didn't inquire, but you might want to if you're planning to visit Mosaic Canyon!

I believe the park has said you can cross country hike around the construction and rejoin the road above the construction. They ask that you park by the ranger station.

"Suggested alternative route around road closure (not a designated trail) adds an additional five miles to the hike (total 9 miles). You will not be hiking on a trail, but walking cross-country through rugged terrain, so please be careful of your footing. Please park at the Stovepipe Wells Ranger Station"

I had the idea on my visit last month to mountain bike around it and then up the road to the entrance but I decided against it. I don't really like biking on that type of terrain and I believe you cannot cross country bike in DV.

"Bikes are not allowed on closed roads, service roads, off roadways, in the wilderness, or on any trails."

Seems a bit strange - are they saying you can't walk up the road? The road is pretty straight line, but it's only 2.3 miles. To add an extra 5 miles to the hike... maybe they mean round trip?

My guess was that the road is now a construction site now and they don't want people walking through a construction site. Hence the recommendation to leave from the ranger station instead. I believe starting from the ranger station and hiking cross country up the fan and meeting the road above the construction would add a 1000 ft or so at most to the total hike. Cross country hiking a bit slower than walking up a road though.

You can park at the gate closure and walk on up. If you can walk x-country in rough desert you are not going to find it a challenge to walk around the construction site. You'll have the canyon mostly to yourself! A handful of parties walk into the canyon each day despite the road closure. Enjoy!
