I guess Y'all are right -- I'll shut up about the subject. Hopefully nothing more will happen -- losing a member of their community this way will likely suppress some of the wilder fighter stuff in the canyon for a while. I'll still enjoy the jets occasionally -- I always have, though sitting in the sun for hours waiting for something to happen is not my thing.

I wonder if the Navy is getting some pushback from somewhere about the canyon. They were incredibly lucky with this one. -- nobody died. Those French tourists will be living with this for the rest of their lives -- there are apparently large skin grafts scheduled on at least two of those folks -- as of the beginning of the week a couple were apparently still in hospital. This was a bigger deal than the military or the media are publicly acknowledging, and completely innocent tourists are gonna die there at some point.

I haven't seen any additional information on the investigation and possible outcome on the aviation and military news sites. From what I have found, the R-2508 Complex is considered to be of strategic importance to the military...

"R-2508 Complex-National Importance: The R-2508 Complex is strategically important to the nation. It is an important national military asset with capabilities for weapons research and development, and an arena for realistic military training. The proximity of the Point Mugu Sea Range (located over the Pacific Ocean) combined with the inland mountains and desert open spaces of the R-2508 Complex, provide the premier, instrumented setting for conducting warfare testing and training exercises."

Besides Death Valley National Park, the R-2508 Complex has operations over Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park and Dome Land and John Muir Wilderness areas.

The Jedi Transition, which runs through the canyon in Death Valley National Park, is just one small leg of the Sidewinder low level training route. The August 2, 2019 R-2508 User's Briefing included a lot of information on the Sidewinder route but not a mention of the July 31, 2019 crash.

It's just a guess, but I am thinking that the Navy will conclude their investigation and address any of their concerns with updated pilot information and training before they open the Jedi Transition again.

Here is info on another military jet crash that occurred within the R-2508 Complex December 2012...

The crash was captured on a couple of the Owens Lake dust cams. In the image on the link below you can see the black smoke on the far left side of the image at about the center...

This 2017 Global Hawk drone crash occurred in the same area though it didn't have anything to do with the R-2508 Complex...

Always worth remembering that these things may be flown by over motivated 25 year olds, but they are maintained largely by undermotivated 20 year olds.
Having spent most of my AF career in aircraft maintenance, this caught my eye. Blue-blood commissioned officer prejudice against stupid, worthless enlisted folks, perhaps?

Too bad the knuckle-busters are lowly commoners, and not a member of royalty. The commissioned officer corps of the US armed forces is as close as it gets to a royal class in this country.

To what are more crashes attributed: Crew error? Or maintenance errors?

Back to the original subject, I'm just waiting for two of the F-18's playing grab-ass (chasing each other in a circle) over FC or SW to collide. How many casualties might result from that? The excessive military flying is why I have pretty much quit going to DVNP. I still have a few summits I want to visit, which hopefully I can time for major holidays when it's quiet.

When I drove by the viewpoint last week, it was still closed, with a police officer standing guard at the entrance. It was around 100 degrees out and it looked unpleasant for the officer to be there by the road with a bulletproof vest on in that heat. However, when I drove by yesterday (8/20) the parking lot was open, with no one standing guard.

The two remaining Edwards AFB NOTAMs pertaining to the training route...

M0624/19 - *RESTRICTION* ALL AIRCRAFT MAINTAIN 1500'AGL OR ABOVE OVER THE JEDI TRANSITION.
M0631/19 - SIDEWINDER CLOSED POINT A TO POINT C.

...were cancelled this morning at 7:41 AM local time.

It appears that the entire low level training route is open...
