Thank you for posting this. Unsurprisingly, it was in the Father Crowley Point area.

A google search turned up these two articles:

https://www.latimes.com/california/stor ... china-lake

https://abc7.com/navy-f-a-18e-fighter-j ... y/5433048/

Currently, it appears to be unclear how the onlookers were injured.

I haven’t seen any official report on the cause of injuries but one article claimed they were minor burns. Which sounds like the result of a post impact fireball as the same article claimed impact was directly below the viewpoint. You’d just need to be nearby to get a minor burn if that is what happened - no contact with flames necessary. With no sources given for that info in the article I’d take it with a grain of salt for now.

A NPS spokesperson did say there were seven minor injuries so at least the injuries and the location are confirmed by the NPS.

Here is a link to the R-2508 Complex Users Handbook. The map and description of the Sidewinder Low Level Route with the JEDI Transition through Star Wars Canyon is on page 50...

Interesting video of a pilot flying the Sidewinder Low Level Route. The pilot starts the JEDI transition across Owens Lake at the 6 minute mark in the video and enters Star Wars Canyon at the 9:15 minute mark...

and my guess is that at 9:23 is when the other jet augered into Father Crawley. Gawd, what an awful mess that must have been. I can't believe that the pilot had any chance of ejecting due to the speed of events.

Here's another pilot eye view where at 5:21 is about where the crash happened.

I just called PSR for update

The man whom I spoke with on the phone said that Father Crowley parking is closed off but the highway is still open. He has not heard any more details than that and referred to the latest media releases.

Here's a Fox News with photo of the mushroom cloud at the crash site.

Sadly, the pilot lost his life.

Clever move, to call PSR. From that Fox report, it sounds like debris, at least, flew up on over the canyon rim into the viewing area. Wow. Someone must have gotten photos. Glad there were no more injuries. Now let's see if the parking area gets closed off - would be reasonably hard to enforce as that's a well known plane watching spot.

It seems obvious to me that that training route just needs to be closed -- end of problem. That has always been a very dangerous flight through that canyon. This accident was inevitable.

I would truly miss watching the aircraft flying by. I know planes crash in the plains land. I wonder what the comparison is between DV and other flight training areas. I really only wonder a little because whatever comparison it is I will still enjoy watching them in DV if not over acting and shutting down.

At the NAS Lemoore press briefing today the officer said that there have been other incidents along the low level training route and this is the first accident in Rainbow Canyon.

Rainbow Canyon is just one small segment of a much larger route. The segment involved in the accident, shown on the map below as segment C to J, probably isn't anymore inherently dangerous than any other section of the route...

https://www.edwards.af.mil/Portals/50/d ... 153415-563

In comparison to us civilians, for the years of 2015 through 2018, there have been 3 fatal accidents and 95 injury accidents along Hwy. 190 in Inyo County.
