DEVA Updates From Feb 5th - 10th

Post by Death Valley Dazed » Wed Feb 12, 2020 3:40 pm

I spliced together a five-minute video of my miscellaneous activities in the park this past week. There is always so much to see and do I feel overwhelmed and when lucky enough to score some cool images it's even more fun. I have my usual string of trip report videos in process including, East Fork Trellis Canyon, Little Bridge Canyon Detour, Monarch Canyon Waterfall, King Midas Artifact History Hunt With Jim and Anna Harris (the last people alive to have actually worked the mine providing some color via my cell phone conversation from the mouth of the canyon) and some new (for me) discoveries from the outskirts of Darwin, California.

In the meantime do some catching up here. The new construction in Beatty, NV appears to be a hotel office but I'm not sure. I was in a hurry to get to Monarch Canyon so did not stop to ask for more information.

Hello DVD
Do you happen to know what became of the "Beatty Hotel"? I think that was the right name it was the historic hotel that was moved there from Rhyolite.
I am just curious because I did some remodel work on the place in the early 2000s.

I'm not the best historian "in them thar parts" so I have no personal knowledge on your question. Perhaps this is the one you worked on? If you can dig up some older images of your own on the matter, that'd be cool!

Thanks for that link it is the only pic I have seen on the net about that hotel. Somehow I had the idea that you lived in the area and might have some local knowledge about the place. I did get to see an old photograph of it taken shortly after it had been moved from Rhyolite that had a few men on the porch and a burro or two on the street that I would love to see again.

The building in the picture is next door to the Happy Burro restaurant. I don't know if it is in use or not.

Curious, so I called The Happy Burro to ask but no one answered. I then called The Exchange Club Hotel and spoke with a friendly staffer there who told me the following.

1. The old hotel next door (east) to the Happy Burro is not open for business but the owners of the Happy Burro "stay there."

2. The new as of about a year ago restaurant across the street (east) from the old hotel used to be KC's but is now Roadhouse 95.

3. The new building under construction across the street (south) from the Happy Burro will be a barb-b-que restaurant of an unknown name at this time.

4. The Exchange Club on the main corner went out of business as a hardware second-hand store and is being gutted and refurbished to be a hotel and casino again.

6. Beatty has been picking up more tourism and business, thus the new construction and additions.

Here's a collage of photos I pulled from the Internet regarding this information. The bathroom apparently services Happy
Burro guests and the funny sign is posted upper right above that urinal. LOL

Thanks for the pictures. I really enjoyed my stay in Beatty, the board and bat siding on the motel was put up by me and my late partner milled from our sawmill in Idaho.

Thanks for sharing these details. I'll take some more images of the hotel myself the next time through Beatty.

That would be great, I used to have pictures of the place but they are gone.
I hope some day I can get back down to that area but the next time I want to visit Death Valley, we just did not have the time to go.
