Surprise Canyon Hike, 1996

Post by D.A. Wright » Tue Dec 06, 2016 5:49 pm

Been slowly digitizing old Hi-8 and VHS video tapes to digital. The link below will take you to a 1996 hike up the lower part of Surprise Canyon between Chris Wicht Camp to the top of the falls. About ten and a half minutes long.

My original post was modified in that I added a Windows Media version of the same video. I also found that when I uploaded an associated .xmp metadata file to the original .mpg video it then played. Using the library's Windows 10 computers, I then had no issues opening either after adding the .wmv video and the data files.

Could run it fine from your second link. That is a crazy ride! You did that? Is it still alllowed to drive over a stream? I hope not!

Looks like you need to have an account to view your video, D. A.

I could see the youtube vid of climbing the falls just fine. Crazy stuff! Does a Jeep get damaged when it slips off the rocks like the red one did?

Are we all on the same page? I'm looking for a vid of hiking up the canyon that D. A took. There is also a vid in the forum chain, and cited by Sparky, that shows some jeeps getting winched up the falls. I do not think this is what D.A. posted. Maybe I goofed.

"D.A's second link" points to a message in a forum thread that he started. As near as I can tell the vids are linked in the first message in the forum, but I can't play them. If they are linked from elsewhere in the message chain, I don't see them or I just screwed up.

Not sure what is going on. I don't know if you have to be a member to view my original video. I posted the same video in Windows Media format in the original first post, just look for the link "Surprise_1996.wmv" which seems to work better for most.

The Jeep video is not mine. I found it looking for a video to show how difficult it was to get vehicles up this part of the canyon after the 1984 flashfloods. I have one of Rick Russell's videos, which focuses on his tours up the canyon and well illustrates the difficulty getting a vehIcle up the lower canyon.

If you look down the thread, you will see a 1950s photo of a 1955 or 1956 Buick at Panamint City, driven up by a couple, the smelter stack in the background that I posted later. That was during the days when Inyo aCounty still maintained the road.

The route was closed to vehicles after around 2000, after the Center for BioDiversity lawsuit. My original post toched on that.
