3 Stans in 3 weeks

Post by netllama » Sat Jul 27, 2019 9:21 pm

Continuing my periodic, ongoing series of trips to the world's deserts, I've recently returned from spending 3 weeks in central Asia. Specifically, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan & Kazakhstan. Don't feel bad if you have no clue where these countries are on a map. I couldn't find them either until recently (they're roughly way north of India, and a good 23 hours of flying from California). All 3 of these countries used to be part of the Soviet Union (USSR) back in the days of communism. But they have thousands of years of vibrant history before that era, as the fabled 'silk road' between Europe and China ran through here. This is a harsh, unforgiving land of extremes. Bitter cold in winter, and blasting heat in summer. I visited in summer, which meant it was above 100F nearly every day, and AC is mostly a foreign concept. This was Death Valley heat in a region where millions of people live.
