hiker finds human skull

Post by netllama » Sun Dec 16, 2012 5:23 pm

File this in the "is it a hoax" and "wtf" departments. I ran across this bizarre tweet earlier today from someone who claimed to have found a human skull while hiking in Death Valley:
https://twitter.com/brielley/status/280443205420478465

That tweet points to the following image of the skull on instagram:

which links to this image:

I can't quite tell if this is a rather elaborate hoax, or if its legitimate. Seems rather odd & disturbing that a human skull would be found out there, unless this is the remains of yet another person who went missing out there years ago?

Will be interesting to see how this plays out, if there's any press on it.

I can't find anything on it.

At first glance the skull looks to me to be that of a young person. Any educated guesses?

I work in healthcare with a good background in anatomy and my educated guess is the skull has been out there for quite a while and is that of an adult. I'd like to know what area it was found in if indeed the story is true.

I started comparing it to some of the fine examples that Dr. Google had on his shelf. I now agree it's of an adult.

There is a photo collage on the girl's page of her DV trip. Someone might pick up a few clues as to the area she was possibly hiking.

None of those photos in the collage look anything like any area in DV I have been to. Unless those marshland canals are at Saratoga Springs.

I did a Google image search and Google couldn't find any matching images so she didn't get the photo from anywhere else online.

It is not a hoax. All the info I have is that Inyo County is aware of it and it is not on National Park property.

Yeah it's pretty clear from the photo collage that she was not hiking or staying within the park boundaries.

I sent this to a friend to have them check and below is what they noticed...

If you browse through this chick's Instagram account, there is this picture:

I think it looks like the general Tecopa area, and specifically the
China Date Ranch, which has teepee accommodations:

Not exactly Death Valley, but I don't think this girl knows the
difference. That entire area is real heavy with mud hills, which looks
like the background of the skull image.

I tried to contact this person on twitter inquiring exactly where she found the skull, but no response thus far. I'm not terribly optimistic that I'll hear back either.
