Just found out about this new product. Looks interesting at less then half the cost of a sat phone.

Yes, I agree this and the sat phones do cost. But there is just something about being able to actually connect with someone when you are in a dire emergency for either yourself or someone else and knowing that the right kind of help is on the way and coming to the correct location.

I see they're using the Iridium network. Do you have to pay some sort of activation fee or monthly subscription? I didn't see any mention of that on the sites.

The Geopro looks like one of a number of units intended for sale to employers to provide logging, tracking and safety functions for employees at remote locations via the sat-phone satellite systems.

In addition to the Spot II, there are other systems aimed at individual use like a recent one from Delorme:

The Delorme unit costs more than the Spot, but it uses Iridium for full-time coverage.
