Sadly, another historic building burned to the ground. One with a historical connection with Cerro Gordo.
The Carson & Colorado narrow gauge railroad was built off of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad at Mound House, south of Virginia City, east of Carson City and just west of Dayton. The narrow gauge was built over the next three years southward with intent to tap into booming camps. It terminated at Keeler, at the bottom of the Yellow Grade below Cerro Gordo.
Up to yesterday, the only remaining depots left behind and still standing were Keeler, Laws and Dayton (a freight depot at Wabuska was moved to the Nevada state museum at Carson City years ago and is still in use). But yesterday, the passenger depot at Dayton, abandoned in 1938, moved and has changed ownership since, burned to the ground. Arson is suspected.
