I took this photo in the Park. Can you identify what's in this pic?

And for bonus points, can you pin-point where I was standing when I snapped this?!

Awesome shot, Candace! A far in zoom from White Mountain Peak? ;)

Seriously, though, I am guessing White Mountain Peak was close to directly behind you, because there is a nice view of it from the top of the Hidden Dunes.

I am going to go with Nikolaus Eureka Mine for your location when taking the picture.

Yes, that is a view of the Eureka Dunes and the "Hidden Dunes" in Eureka Valley. The picture was taken from Brass benchmark.

Brass BM is on top of an unnamed high point. It appears on the Joshua Flats 7.5' USGS quad.

I got to it by driving up the Harlis and Broady Road and parking then hiking cross-country, then making my way up steep ridges to it.

I'm not sure if this was the optimum route to the summit. But I couldn't find any online information about it. Plus I couldn't even find the data sheet for the benchmark on the USGS website. I had to write to them to get it copy of it from some archive.

I had noticed this benchmark on the topo map and developed an irrational interest in visiting it! But it took me until earlier this year to finally make it up there.

BTW, here is a pic of my coveted benchmark  And of the mountain itself, as seen from the North Eureka Valley Road. The BM is on the high point in the center of the photo. The Victor Consolidated Mine area and the Harlis-Broady Road are out of sight to the right.

Below that is a screencap from the scanned document (data sheet) they sent me. It didn't help me figure out a route: the surveyors reached the point by helicopter!

I hope to someday post a proper trip report!!

Oh come on people, surely someone else would like to test everyone? ;-)

I don't think this has been posted before... This is right in DV, along a fairly popular dirt road. Where are these tanks located?

West Side Road at the junction with the road heading to the Queen of Sheba Mine?

 I figured this one would be pretty easy! Yes, you are correct. At least on some maps, this is shown as Salt Well.

I walked around the mesquite grove a little bit. I I didn't see any water, and even the mesquite looked pretty dried out.

Took me a while to find it on Google Maps in satellite view. From what little background I could see in your photo I knew it was in a mesquite grove and likely along West Side Road. At first I was thinking it was part of the old Eagle borax works, but I couldn’t see evidence of any tanks. Took me about 15 minutes of looking along the road a few times before I stumbled upon it.

Another one! I only recently stumbled upon this, I wonder if any of you know where it is? Have you walked it? This is in DV.

No idea where but just wanted to say

Post by Death Valley Dazed » Fri Dec 22, 2017 7:37 am

how cool it is that someone took the time and effort to make the sign and then dig the holes and plant the damn thing for others to benefit from. Lots of hard work has gone into making DV such a fun place to visit and I appreciate those efforts.

No guesses, even? It's in a developed area, but not in Furnace or Cow Creek. Is that enough of a hint?

I'm thinking somewhere off 190 east. There is a power pole off to the right...maybe up and beyond Texas Springs/The Inn? Off Greenwater? Looks higher elevation than in the valley. Wildrose?

Googling that doesn't bring up anything in DV.
