I am going to be doing a couple of steep hikes in October and I would like to pick up some hiking poles.

Anyone have recommendations?

I only use one pole, but I got a pair at Wal Mart for $10-$15 a few years ago and they've been with me for a few hundred miles. I can't say how they stack up to higher end poles. The ones I have have been great for me, though.

I used a set of aluminum house-brand ones from REI for years. They eventually gave out and I replaced them with Black Diamond's finest carbon offering. If I had to get another pair, and didn't have access to a Black Diamond discount, I'd probably just do REI again as they're reputable and will replace gear due to failure. Thanks to both of you for the info.

I'm going to go through that list and see which ones best suit my needs!

I have a pair of Leki Super Makalu's that I have used for 20 years. I don't know what it takes to wear these poles out. You get what you pay for.
