Jets at Star Wars canyon

Post by Bob from Boston » Wed Nov 13, 2019 6:23 am

Hello,

I'm planning my third motorcycle trip from Las Vegas to Death Valley. We may want to see the fighter jets at the Star Wars Canyon. We would be there on a Saturday in March or April. Would we have a good chance of seeing them on a Saturday? Is there a time of day for the best chance to see them?
Is there a better chance of seeing them during the Red Flag exercises?

also, if anyone would like to share the top 5 places to visit in Death Valley, I would appreciate it.

thank you

Bob from Boston

Hi Bob. I dont know about the fighters in Star Wars Canyon. Is that the canyon at Father Crowley Overlook? I believe it is. There is another thread about the recent crash there that has more information.

Everyone is going to have a different top 5 places to visit there. I would say the "guidebook" answer would be: Golden Canyon / Zabriskie Point, Dante's View, Badwater Basin, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, and Mosaic Canyon. I love the slot canyons there, so mine are Fall, Mosaic, Titus, and Marble Canyons and Racetrack Playa.

They have stopped all flights through that canyon (called Rainbow Canyon) after a crash there a few months ago killed a pilot and injured bystanders. It was a shortcut on a training loop that pilots fly to gather flight hours, called the JEDI transition (it crossed from section DE to IJ) so they so still fly north along Owens Valley and south through Panamint Valley, just less frequent and more often out of sight.

Any sights you want to see in Death Valley depend entirely on your physical ability and desires and the vehicle you are driving. If you're on a motorcycle, then you probably don't want to do things with long gravel/sand roads. The stuff in the tourist core like Golden Canyon, Artist Palette, Badwater, Dante's View, and Mosaic Canyon would probably be best for your group. There is a ton of interesting stuff if you have a bike you want to take on longer gravel roads such as the Racetrack, but you really have to be prepared for anything out there. Most bikes I see out that way are Europeans on rally dirt bikes who clearly do that sort of stuff often. If you're just passing through for a day, definitely go up to Dante's View and down to Badwater, heading back north past Artist Palette and take a walk at Salt Creek or Golden Canyon.

If anyone should hear of any jets flying again before our trip on April 3rd and 4th 2020 please post it here.
I'm very excited to go to Death Valley again for the third time, and probably the last :(

thank you

Bob

Are you people sure flights have stopped? I believe it was posted somewhere here that jets were flying in the canyon again as of 9/16, perhaps just not as often. I know there were people up there a couple of months ago sitting around waiting. I believe they said the jets had come through.

This was from somewhere on this site:

""The Edwards AFB NOTAM closing the Jedi Transition and Starwars Canyon low level training route segment, M0592/19, was canceled yesterday, Aug. 15.

The segment is back open with the following restriction until Sept. 16...

Data Current as of: Fri, 16 Aug 2019 16:47:00 UTC

EDW EDWARDS AFB

M0624/19 - *RESTRICTION* ALL AIRCRAFT MAINTAIN 1500'AGL OR ABOVE OVER THE JEDI TRANSITION. 16 AUG 15:15 2019 UNTIL 16 SEP 23:59 2019. CREATED: 16 AUG 15:15 2019""

You can check for notices here. Enter EDW in the field for Edwards AFB and select View NOTAMS...

https://pilotweb.nas.faa.gov/PilotWeb/

Then in the long list of NOTAMS look for one that mentions JEDI and/or STARWARS.

If you don't see anything then it should be open. But they don't announce when the low level segments are going to be used.

There is more on the training complex here...

is it ok to go in the water at Darwin Falls? Are there any other places to go in the water in Death Valley?

I have. There are no signs indicating not to, though I think water for PSR comes from some place up in there.

I've been in the water at the SPW swimming pool :)

The pools in Saline Valley are in the park.

(I assume you're talking about a pool for at least partial immersion?)

There's a couple small ponds along the stream there. Those are THE WATER SOURCE for Panamint Springs village. They have a small chlorination and filter system, but it's best if we don't go in their drinking water. You'll see the water pipe along your walk up the canyon.

From the park page: " Please protect this fragile resource. No swimming!"

I know there are signs of course no dogs and to also stay out of the water as it is drinking water for PSR.

The sign says no swimming.
